International Box Office: Curse is Blessed with a First Place Debut

April 24, 2019

The Curse of La Llorona

The Curse of La Llorona earned first place on the international chart with $29 million on 13,155 screens in 71 markets. This is excellent for a film that cost $9 million to make. However, it is also playing in nearly every major market, so it doesn’t have a lot of room to grow. The film had a very strong opening in Mexico with $5.1 million on 2,432 screens, while it was equally strong in Colombia with $2.3 million on 421. It easily earned first place in both markets. On the other hand, the film struggled in France ($2.0 million on 254 screens); Spain ($1.8 million on 330 screens); and Russia ($1.1 million on 1,758). It failed to crack $1 million over the weekend in a number of major markets. It came the closest in South Korea with $905,000 on 620 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.25 million, while it was further behind in Italy ($852,000 on 314 screens) and Brazil ($775,000 on 561). The film opens in the U.K. and Japan in the next couple of weeks.

Shazam was pushed into second place, but still did well with $22 million on 16,525 screens in 80 markets for totals of $201.5 million internationally and $322.0 million worldwide. This weekend, it made its debut in Japan earning $2.0 million on 723 screens, which is not exactly a great start. Additionally, this is the film market for the film, so it’s all downhill from here. That said, it still has a shot at $400 million worldwide, which would be more than enough to guarantee a sizable profit.

Dumbo slipped a spot to third with $13.7 million in 55 markets for totals of $206.6 million internationally and $307.7 million worldwide. This was an expensive movie to make, so it will need to be a major hit on the home market to break even. On the positive side, Disney is launching their streaming service by the end of the year, or early next year if you live in Canada, so it will make money through synergy there.

Fan Tang Feng Bao 4 has reached $100 million in its native China earning $11.34 million over the weekend for a total there of $110.35 million after three weeks of release. Overall, the film pulled in $11.98 million in 6 markets for an international total of $113.03 million.

Wonder Park entered the international chart for the first time earning fifth place with $10.9 million in 56 markets for an international total of $48.5 million. This is slightly more than it has earned domestically, but not enough to break even any time soon. The film opened in third place in China with $3.27 million over the weekend for a total opening of $3.29 million.

We are continuing to track Captain Marvel as it attempts to surpass Captain America: Civil War on the MCU chart. I didn’t think it would get there, but this week it rose domestically and that’s a sign Avengers: Endgame is giving it a significant boost at the box office. Internationally, it managed ninth place with $6.5 million in 49 markets for totals of $689.5 million internationally and $1.090 billion worldwide. It would need long legs from this point on to catch Civil War; however, it will never reach 6th place in the M.C.U., because Avengers: Endgame will surpass it well before then. In fact, there are some who think Endgame will top $1 billion during its opening weekend.
