Adventure Time: The Complete Collection

Adventure Time completed its run last fall having run eight years and nearly 300 episodes. The Complete Collection DVD came out last week, but the screener just missed the deadline to be included last week. Is the box set worth picking up for fans of the show? Is it worth the upgrade for those who have purchased previous releases?

The Show

I’m not going to review the TV show itself for a few reasons, mainly because I didn’t get the show to review. I only got the art book and the bonus DVD. I have previously reviewed a couple of seasons, as well as one of the mixed DVDs. The show is excellent throughout most of its run and even the later couple of seasons are still good, even if they are off the show’s peak quality.

The Extras

Farewell Tour is a 45-minute long featurette about the show, featuring a lot of the cast and crew talking how the show is made, as well as their favorite parts of the show. The Sonic Sounds of OOO is a 14-minute look at all of the music from the show. Diamonds and Lemons is one of the last episodes of the series, a bonus episode, which has the gang playing Minecraft. “Come Along With Me” Music Video is a music video for the ending theme song. More of that later. Reboot - Animatic is exactly what is sounds, the animatic for the episode “Reboot”. It is strange to watch the show without sound effects or music. Finally there’s ComicCon Concert, a 12-song, 18-minute long concert the cast put on for ComicCon.

Also coming with this Complete Collection DVD is an artbook featuring the frames from the “Come With Me” music video. All 1200 frames from the short video are here, ranging in size from thumbprint size to two-page spreads. It rather surreal to flip through, but also rather cool to look at.

The Verdict

I think for most fans, Adventure Time: The Complete Collection is easily worth the money, even if they have most, if not all of the episodes on DVD already. However, if they are only interested in Blu-ray releases, then this will be a deal-breaker for them.
