Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spider-Man: Far From Home is getting off to a fantastic start with a three-day weekend haul of $93.6 million giving it a six-day debut of $185.1 million. This is more than it cost to make and it means the film is nearly guaranteed a healthy profit before it reaches the home market, even if it has soft legs. Additionally, its reviews are outstanding and it earned an A from CinemaScore, so its legs should be long for a blockbuster film. Internationally, the film pulled in $238 million on 52,800 screens in 66 markets for totals of $395 million internationally and $580 million worldwide. This was led by a six-day, $33.8 million first place debut in South Korea, while it earned $30.6 million during its second weekend in China for a two-week total of $167.4 million there.

Toy Story 4 is holding on better than expected, especially during the Fourth of July, earning $34.3 million over the weekend for a three-week total $306.6 million. Internationally, it is pulling in $43.1 million in 45 markets for totals of $343.4 million internationally and $650.0 million worldwide. If the film disappeared from theaters tomorrow, this would still be enough to break even early in its home market run.

Yesterday is holding on well, as expected, with $10.75 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $36.88 million. It is not doing as well internationally with just $7.9 million in 35 markets for a total of $20.1 million so far. That said, it has earned enough that Universal’s share of the box office is more than it cost to make, so it is on pace to break even early in its home market run.

Annabelle Comes Home is holding on well, for a horror movie, earning $9.75 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $50.16 million. Internationally, the film is adding $20.4 million in 69 markets to its totals, which now sit at $84.6 million internationally and $134.8 million worldwide. This is amazing for a film that cost just $26 million to make, even if it is well below the franchise average.

Aladdin is going to remain in the top five one last weekend thanks in part to a better-than-expected hold and in part to a weaker opening by Midsommar. The Disney film is earning $7.6 million over the weekend, pushing its running tally to $320.8 million domestically. The film continues to impress internationally with $16.2 million in 55 markets over the weekend for totals of $600.9 million internationally and $921.7 million worldwide. At this point, we have to talk about the possibility of a $1 billion worldwide run. I don’t think it will get there, but it is not impossible either.

Midsommar is opening on the low end of expectations with $6.56 million over the three-day weekend for a total opening of $10.9 million. While this is disappointing, it is important to remember the film cost less than $10 million to make, so I think A24 will be happy with this result. I don’t expect it to have long legs though. While its reviews are strong, it only managed a C plus from CinemaScore, so it is merely average for a horror film. That said, it cost less than $10 million to make and A24 sold off the international rights, so it will break even early in its home market run.
