Weekend Wrap-Up: Angel has a Divine Debut

August 27, 2019

Angel Has Fallen

Angel Has Fallen led the way at the weekend with $21.38 million. There were some other pleasant surprises in the top ten and this helped the overall box office to a surprise win. It was down 9.6% from last weekend to $108 million; however, this was 5.6% higher than the same weekend last year and we haven’t had many reasons to celebrate in the year-over-year competition, so let’s focus on that. Year-to-date, 2019 is still behind 2018 and is so by nearly identical margins as last weekend at 6.3% or $500 million. This is still a deep hole to try and climb out of, especially since there are only four months left in the year, and I will be happy if we can just cut that gap in half by the end of the year.

The Has Fallen franchise suffered a massive drop-off at the domestic box office from the first film to the second and most thought the same would happen this weekend. Instead, Angel Has Fallen was down a mere 1.2% from London, which is practically a tie. Additionally, this film tied its predecessor with an A minus from CinemaScore, while its reviews are a significant improvement over London’s reviews. This suggests similar legs at worse, so the film should be a financial success and result in yet another installment hitting theaters shortly.

Good Boys held on even better than expected with $11.64 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $41.94 million. The film has already made enough to cover its production budget domestically, so even without much impact internationally, it should break even sooner rather than later.

Overcomer missed high expectations, but still did well enough with $8.15 million during its opening weekend. Like most faith-based films, it wasn’t able to impress critics, but its core audience gave it an A plus from CinemaScore, so its legs should be as long as other offerings from the Kendrick Brothers have been.

Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw managed fourth place with $8.07 million over the weekend, for a total of $147.63 million, after four weeks of release. It won’t match its $200 million production budget domestically, but it is a monster hit internationally.

The Lion King was right behind with $8.07 million, putting it just $3,000 behind fourth place Hobbs and Shaw. On the other hand, the film has made $510.55 million during its six-week run, making it the second biggest hit of the year on the domestic box office chart.

Ready or Not just missed the top five with $8.02 million over the three-day weekend for a five-day opening of $11.04 million. This is a great start for a film that cost just $6 million to make. Additionally, its reviews and its B plus from CinemaScore are much better than average for Black Comedies / horror movies and it should help it avoid a collapse this coming weekend.

There were a lot of other films in the sophomore class, only one of which remained in the top ten. The Angry Birds Movie 2 landed in seventh place down only 38% to $6.38 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $27.11 million. This is a better hold that most family films manage, but it is also too little, too late. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged just missed the top ten landing in 11th place with $3.92 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $15.34 million. This is a lot more than the $5 million it reportedly cost to make, but not as much as it cost to make and advertise, meaning it still has a ways to go before it breaks even. Blinded By the Light was down 54% to $1.98 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $8.10 million. This decline likely has more to do with theater owners moving the film to smaller screens rather than poor word-of-mouth. Finally there’s Where’s You Go, Bernadette, which fell 59% to $1.42 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $6.61 million. This film opened poorly and its word-of-mouth isn’t helping.
