Theater Averages: They Call Me Mr. Klein

September 19, 2019

Hustlers

Mr. Klein, a 40-year old re-release, earned first place on the theater average chart during its second weekend of release with $18,546 in one theater. Up next was The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos with an average of $14,418 in two theaters. The final film in the $10,000 club was Hustlers, which barely got there earning an average of $10,210 in 3,250 theaters.

There were a ton of other new limited releases and one of them did well. The others, not so much. Monos came very close to the $10,000 club with an average of $9,969 in five theaters. Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements and Cracked Up had nearly identical openings with $5,424 and $5,310 in one theater, respectively. Imprisoned struggled with an opening of $4,381 in one theater. Chained for Life earned an average of $3,708 in two theaters. One Cut of the Dead was next with an average of $3,180 in two theaters; while this is not a lot, it had a very few showings over the weekend. The Sound of Silence was also playing in two theaters earning an average of $2,725. Chasing Einstein wasn’t too far behind with an average of $2,427 in four theaters.

There were also several films that missed the Mendoza Line. Fagara came very close with an average of $1,939 in 13 theaters. Out of Liberty was very close behind with an average of $1,901 in 35 theaters. Another Day of Life and Desolation Center had nearly identical openings, with averages of $1,691 and $1,646, respectively. Freaks was the widest limited release of the week playing in 111 theaters, but it only managed an average of $1,455.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love made it to $1 million just before the weekend. That’s as far as it will go, but $1 million is still a lot for a documentary.
  • Chhichhore cracked $1 million early in the weekend and it has a shot at $2 million.
  • Maiden got to $3 million just before the weekend, which is fantastic for a documentary.
  • Brittany Runs a Marathon reached $2 million before the weekend and $3 million over the weekend. Furthermore, while I don’t expect it to expand further beyond this point, it should stick around in theaters for long enough to reach at least a few more milestones.
