Weekend Wrap-Up: Joker Destroys Box Office, Nearly Reaches Century Mark

October 8, 2019

Joker

Joker easily dominated the weekend box office crushing Venom’s October record in the process. The film’s $96.20 million opening was more than 60% of the $150 million total box office earned this weekend. Furthermore, the weekend total was 64% more than last weekend, which is great news for 2019, as it has been struggling. Unfortunately, this is still 15% lower than the same weekend last year when Venom had A Star is Born opening strong as counter-programing. Year-to-date, 2019 has pulled in $8.46 billion, which is a lot, but it is 5.2% or $470 million behind 2018’s record-setting pace of $8.93 billion.

Joker nearly single-handedly saved 2019 at the box office earning $96.20 million during its opening weekend. The film is aimed at an older audience than most super hero films, so it could have better reviews as well. However, its reviews have slipped below the certified fresh level at 69% positive, while it only managed a B plus from CinemaScore, which is also merely average, so I’m not sure how long its legs will be. They should certainly be better than Venom’s were, but we will have to wait till next weekend to have any concrete evidence to back that up.

Abominable fell a little faster than expected down 42% to $11.92 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $37.75 million. It should crack $50 million by the end of next weekend and end up being a solid midlevel hit. However, it will need help internationally and on the home market to break even anytime soon.

On the other hand, Downton Abbey has likely already begun to earn a profit after just three weeks. It earned $7.99 million over the weekend for a running tally of $73.62 million.

Hustlers continues its march to $100 million earning $6.39 million over the weekend for a four-week total of $91.42 million. This will be the film’s last weekend in the top five, barring a miracle next weekend, but it will continue to earn millions over the next several weeks.

As expected, It: Chapter Two crossed $200 million over the weekend earning $5.32 million giving it a total of $202.17 million after a month of release.

Judy rose to sixth place with $4.60 million over the weekend for a total of $9.06 million. The film might continue to expand. It will certainly continue to reach major milestones.

Meanwhile, War opened in the top ten with $1.61 million in 305 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.11 million.
