Theater Averages: The Irishman Enters Witness Protection

November 7, 2019

The Irishman

It appears Netflix will not be reporting box office numbers for The Irishman. We’ve seen reports by third parties that the film earned $350,000 in eight theaters for an opening weekend average of $43,750. The only confirmed member of the $10,000 club was Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which earned an average of $15,097 in 15 theaters. However, it is a roadshow tour and ticket prices for some shows are greatly inflated. This is still an impressive number, but don’t expect it to expand truly wide.

There were only two new limited release we had confirmed numbers for. American Dharma did well with an opening $7,287 in one theater. On the other hand, To Be of Service missed the Mendoza Line ($2,000/theater) with an opening of just $1,904, also in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Housefull 4 reached $1 million just before the weekend and could reach $2 million before its box office run is over. Or, it could disappear from theaters on Friday. Bollywood movies tend to do that.
  • Pain & Glory got to $2 million during the weekend and I don’t think it is done. It very likely won’t expand any more, but it also won’t disappear from theaters in the next few weeks.
  • Jojo Rabbit made it to $2 million, $3 million, and $4 million over the weekend. Its theater average is also very close to $10,000, so it has plenty of room to expand.
  • The Lighthouse made it to $5 million and $6 million over the weekend, but it isn’t going to expand any further. In fact, it might not last long enough to reach $10 million.
  • Parasite also manged to get to $5 million and $6 million over the weekend, but I’m more bullish about its longterm chances.
