Daily Box Tracking: Frozen Fills Up on Wednesday, Knives Out Opens on the Up and Up

Frozen II

After breaking the record for Biggest Monday of November and the Biggest Tuesday of November, Frozen II had to settle for second place for the Biggest Wednesday of November, as it earned $23.78 million on Wednesday. This puts it just shy of The Matrix Revolutions’s record of $24.31 million; however, that was The Matrix Revolutions’ opening day, so I think it is safe to assume Frozen II will be back on top on Thursday. Furthermore, this puts the film on pace to top our prediction by a substantial margin. In fact, it looks like it will top its three-day opening weekend over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend. It’s chances of matching its predecessor have increased dramatically.

Lionsgate isn’t releasing box office numbers today, because it’s Thanksgiving, so we don’t have a Wednesday number of Knives Out just yet. That said, other studios have given their estimates and they mostly agree on $8.6 million, which is better than anticipated. If its reviews and its A minus from CinemaScore turn into long legs, it will easily top $20 million over three days and might even hit $25 million. That would be all the more impressive, as not everyone thought it would reach $25 million over five days. A $35 million five-day opening would give it a realistic chance at $100 million domestically, especially if it can remain in wide release until the new year.

Ford v Ferrari is pulling ahead of A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood at $2.94 million to $2.38 million. Ford v Ferrari should easily top our $13 million prediction, while A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is doing better than anticipated by a much smaller degree.

There are no official numbers for Queen and Slim yet, but other studios have it earning between $1.7 million and $1.8 million on Wednesday and that’s without the benefit of previews on Tuesday. The film's reviews and its A minus from CinemaScore should help it easily top our prediction and earn fifth place. In fact, there are some who think it will manage fourth place, overtaking A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood in the process. I'm not that optimistic, but it is possible.
