Theater Averages: A Match Made in Heaven

February 27, 2020

Emma

Emma played matchmaker with audiences and succeeded to the tune of $234,000 in 5 theaters for an average of $46,896. It has significant expansion planned for this weekend and an opening like this is a hopeful sign. On the other hand, I don’t think Come and See will expand significantly, as re-releases rarely do. That said, it did earn $16,053 in one theater, so that theater is happy they booked it. It isn’t looking as bright for Seberg. Granted, it did earn an average of $15,727 in three theaters; however, it was very front-loaded and that’s a bad omen going forward.

The were too many other new limited releases, most of which struggled, but some did really well. This includes Once Were Brothers, which opened with $9,457 in four theaters. Impractical Jokers: The Movie was the widest limited release of the weekend playing in 357 theaters, but that didn’t really hurt its box office numbers, as it earned an average of $7,743. The 2020 version of CatVideoFest earned an average of $7,264 in 30 theaters, which is equally impressive. Young Ahmed also did well with an average of $6,663 in two theaters. On the other hand, My Boyfriend’s Meds struggled with an average of $3,989, but it was playing in 350 theaters, so this is mitigating circumstances.

Premature struggled with an average of $2,477 in four theaters, but at least it avoided the Mendoza line. Ride the Wave wasn’t as lucky with an average of $1,637 in 12 theaters over the weekend; however, it had a special engagement on Wednesday, so it already had $300,000 before the weekend began. Just One More Kiss only earned an average of $1,210 in two theaters, while Goldie took in $1,200 in ten theaters for an average of $120.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • It took two months for The Song of Names to reach $1 million. That’s a long time, but it is still rare for any limited release to get to that milestone.
  • Portrait of a Lady on Fire also got to $1 million, but it did so during just its second weekend of limited release. It could still expand helping it reach further milestones.
  • My Boyfriend’s Meds opened with $1 million, but I’m not sure how long it will last in theaters.
  • Likewise, Impractical Jokers: The Movie opened with more than $2 million, but it too might not have long legs in theaters.
  • Parasite hit $45 million before the weekend and $50 million is very likely.
  • 1917 hit $150 million, which is massive for a wide release. It is nearly unheard of for a limited release.
