Theater Averages: First Cow Comes Home

March 12, 2020

First Cow

First Cow was one of two films in the $10,000 club earning an average of $20,331 in four theaters. The Booksellers was the only other member of the $10,000 club opening with $15,794 in its lone theater.

There were over a dozen other new limited releases to deal with, most of which had middling openings at best. Bacurau was the only one to do well earning an average of $7,346 in two theaters. Up next are a trio of films with similar averages: The Wild Goose Lake at $4,573 in one theater, Swallow at $4,283 in three theaters, and The Burnt Orange Heresy at $4,041 in four. Sorry We Missed You and Powerbomb were also neck-and-neck with averages of $3,145 and $2,904 respectively, both while playing in three theaters. Extra Ordinary avoided the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,579 in 32 theaters.

There were several films that weren’t as lucky. Baaghi 3 missed the Mendoza Line by a very narrow margin earning an average of $1,923 in 265 theaters. Hope Gap was next with an average of $1,721 in 18. King’s Gambit was only playing in 2 theaters and earned less than $2,000 in total managing an average of $968. Beneath Us was right behind with an average of $847 in 162 theaters. Lie Exposed rounds out the list of new releases with an average of $765 in two theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Assistant got to $1 million before the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
  • Portrait of a Lady on Fire hit $3 million in just its fourth weekend of release, but I fear this is as wide as it will get.
  • Emma. had its first weekend of wide release and that helped it get to $6 million.
  • My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising managed to reach $10 million before the weekend and $15 million isn’t out of the question, assuming its theater count doesn’t plummet again.
  • Uncut Gems managed to get all the way to $50 million, which is phenomenal for a limited release. This makes up for its lack of Awards Season success.
