VOD Releases: Harley Quinn Goes Digital

Harley Quinn: Season One

There are some high quality new releases on VOD this week, and several are worth checking out, including Harley Quinn, and Sound! Euphonium the Movie — Our Promise: A Brand New Day. The lack of major theatrical releases over the past couple of months is really beginning to be felt on the home market now, though, with most releases smaller independent films.

Highlights:

Advocate - Reviews
iTunes
A documentary about Lea Tsemel, a Jewish-Israeli lawyer who has been defending the rights of Palestinians for 50 years. The film’s reviews are 100% positive and the average score is nearly 8 out of 10, so most reviews are enthusiastic in their recommendations.

The Booksellers - Reviews
iTunes
The second documentary on this week’s list. This one is about bibliophiles who buy and sell books. The reviews are good, but it is only coming out as a purchase on Friday, so unless you are really into documentaries, you might want to wait for a rental.

Harley Quinn: The Complete First Season - Reviews
Amazon
An animated series aimed at adult fans of DC comics. It stars Harley Quinn and Ivy, among others, as they navigate a new world after Harley Quinn dumps the Joker. I preordered the DVD, because it is cheaper than buying it on VOD.

The Infiltrators - Reviews
Vudu
A thriller based on real life events. In the film, a group of activists go undercover and get detained by ICE in order to expose the abuses at for-profit detention centers. The reviews are very strong and this is still a very relevant subject. There are lot of films on this week’s list, so it will still likely slip between the cracks.

Jump Shot: The Kenny Sailors Story - Reviews
iTunes, Google Play, or Vudu
A documentary about the invention of the jump shot. The reviews are great and if you are a fan of basketball, then you are likely starved for something to watch.

Sound! Euphonium the Movie — Our Promise: A Brand New Day - Reviews
Amazon
The latest movie from one of the most popular and critically-acclaimed anime series is hitting the home market this week. I really wish they would release the full series and not just the spin-off movies. If you are a fan of the franchise, then this is certainly worth picking up while you wait for the full series to come out. For me, this movie is too good for a VOD rental, and I’ll be buying the Blu-ray instead.

There are some good smaller VOD releases this week, including And Then We Danced and Becky. However, the sheer volume of releases will likely prevent any release from finding a substantial audience.
