Which VOD Release will Reign Supreme?

June 10, 2020

King of Staten Island

The King of Staten Island is the biggest VOD release of the week, but you will have to wait until Friday to rent it on Premium VOD. There are also a couple of TV shows hitting VOD this week, Doctor Who: The Complete Twelfth Series and Modern Family: The Eleventh and Final Season. Other highlights include a family film, Think Like a Dog, as well as You Don’t Nomi, a documentary about the very non-family film Showgirls.

Highlights:

Doctor Who: The Complete Twelfth Series - Amazon
I’ve only seen bits and pieces of this franchise. I’ve seen enough to know I like it, but I also know I’ll never be able to catch up at this point, so I don’t want to get too into the show. I only have so much free time and I don’t want one show to suck up every single minute of it. I’ve liked what I’ve seen of Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, but it is not enough to form an informed opinion on the matter. You can buy the show on VOD for $3 an episode, or $20 for all ten. There are also free extras, which is a nice way to see if you might be interested.

The King of Staten Island - Vudu
This is the latest film from writer / director Judd Apatow and like a lot of his films, it is about delayed adulthood. The film has the loudest pre-release buzz of any film on this week’s list and the most starpower among its cast. Its reviews are good, but it isn’t shaping up to be an instant classic. Additionally, it is being released this Friday as a Premium Video on Demand, which means it costs $20 to rent it. Granted, that’s cheaper than it would be to see the film in a theater, if there are any theaters near you that are open, but personally I would still wait until the price comes down.

Modern Family: The Eleventh and Final Season - Amazon
The past few seasons of this show were off its peak. I can admit that as a fan of the show. That said, it was one of only two sitcoms that I actively looked forward to each week. (The other was The Good Place.) Personally, I still stick with physical media, but I’m a dinosaur in that regard, so while I’m waiting for a complete series Blu-ray megaset, other fans can purchase the final season on VOD this week.

Think Like a Dog - Amazon VOD, Amazon 4K UHD VOD, or Google Play
A family film about a kid that develops the ability to talk to his dog. It’s not as bad as it sounds and if you have younger kids, then it is probably worth a $6 rental.

You Don’t Nomi - Amazon
A documentary about Showgirls, specifically its journey from an infamous critical and box office bomb to a beloved cult classic. Showgirls remains the highest-grossing NC-17 movie of all time, partly because it killed the perceived box office viability of NC-17 films. The documentary came out on Tuesday and costs just $5 to rent on Amazon.
