VOD Releases: Horror Films are Out for Blood

September 3, 2020

Followed

It’s a busy week on VOD, especially if you are a fan of horror. Blood Quantum, Followed, and Z are all worth checking out. There are also some smaller horror releases or ones with weaker reviews that might be worth it for more hardcore fans. If you are not a fan of horror, then The Wind Rises is your best bet.

Highlights

Blood Quantum
Vudu
The first of two Canadian horror movies on this week’s list. This one earned better reviews and it has a more important message to talk about, as it is an allegory for the colonization of the native peoples of North America. Fans of horror in general will want to check it out, while those who like their horror with a political message will want to pick it up on Blu-ray.

Children of the Sea
Amazon VOD (English Language Version), Amazon VOD (Japanese Language Version), Google Play, Vudu
This is one of two anime titles on this week’s list. Both are worth checking out, but this is the weaker of the two.

Followed
Amazon, Google Play, or Vudu
This horror film was one of the biggest theatrical hits during the pandemic before studio films started returning to theaters, earning more than $500,000. It also earned very strong reviews and anyone who likes horror in general or haunted-house reality TV shows in particular should check it out.

The Wind Rises
Amazon VOD (English Language Version) or Amazon VOD (Japanese Language Version)
A Hayao Miyazaki film about Jiro Horikoshi, who dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted from a young age and thus unable to become a pilot, Jirou joins the aircraft division of a major Japanese engineering company in 1927. This is an amazing movie and if you are a fan of animation, then it is a must see. In fact, there are some who think it really should have won the Best Feature-Length Animated film in 2014 and I couldn’t put forth a really convincing counter-argument.

The Owners
Amazon
One of several horror films on this week’s list. This one does have more star power than most, as it cast includes Maisie Williams. Unfortunately, the reviews are mixed and the film is only being released in EST this Friday. I would definitely wait until you can rent this one before trying it.

Quarantine Relationship
Vudu
The pandemic has lasted long enough for people to release movies about it before it has finished. This isn’t even the first such movie to be made about the subject.

#Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump
Vudu
A documentary that argues Donald Trump is unfit to be president of the United States. It’s preaching to the choir, so I don’t expect it to change many minds, but at least it is competently made, which is more than I can say for a lot of similar documentaries.

Z
Vudu
A Canadian horror movie starring Keegan Connor Tracy. The film’s reviews are strong enough that it is an easy recommendation for a VOD rental. Additionally, horror films have done really well during the COVID-19 era, as horror is a release, of sorts. On the downside, that does mean there’s a lot of competition.
