Weekend estimates: Godzilla vs. Kong still number one as Voyagers disappoints

April 11, 2021

Godzilla vs. Kong

After last weekend’s relatively excellent opening for Godzilla vs. Kong, the theatrical market is treading water this time around, based on the studios’ Sunday morning estimates. GvK itself is performing a little worse than expected, although not terribly considering its coming off the biggest weekend of the pandemic. Voyagers will earn a disappointing $1.35 million opening, and the returning films are something of a mixed bag.

Overall, the domestic theatrical market is looking like it’ll be down quite sharply from last weekend, which is unsurprising given how much Godzilla vs. Kong is dominating the chart. More worryingly, it will be around 92% of what our model predicted. That’s down to a slightly steeper-than-expected drop for Godzilla and a disappointing debut for Voyagers. Neither film’s performance is disastrous though, and The Unholy’s second-weekend hold is a bright spot. Horror movies tend to be front-loaded, so a fall of only 24% is a sign of good word of mouth, and perhaps some more expansion in the market.

In spite of losing theaters this weekend, Raya and the Last Dragon is also performing well. It will be up about 5% from last weekend, and it’s beginning to look it will have a long run similar to The Croods: A New Age, which stayed in the top six for 18 consecutive weekends. This is Raya’s sixth straight appearance in that top bracket.

After crunching this weekend’s numbers, our model’s assessment of the market is unchanged. It estimates that the share of the normal audience currently going to theaters is 37%, exactly where it was after last weekend.
