Theater Counts: Ghostbusters stays widest release

December 2, 2021

Ghostbusters:Afterlife

With the post-Thanksgiving holiday lull upon us, and no new wide releases debuting this weekend*, last week’s biggest films look to keep their places leading into the first weekend of December. Encanto was the winner at the box office last week, but placed second behind Ghostbusters: Afterlife as the week’s widest releasing film.

* Although it’s not opening this weekend, Christmas with the Chosen: The Messengers opened on Wednesday and will play in an estimated 1,600 locations every day until it concludes on December 10th. Like most films from Fathom Events, box office isn’t being reported.

Encanto scored $27.2M from 3,980 locations during its opening weekend and will retain that count heading into its second week. Afterlife does take a drop this week, but still heads into its third weekend playing in over 4,000 locations (the only film on this week’s list to do so). The latest in the Ghostbusters franchise has so far earned over $118M worldwide since its opening three weeks ago, with $90M of that in North America alone. House of Gucci, which has been neck-and-neck with Encanto this week at the box office, adds six locations this week, coming in at 3,477 locations. Still humming along is the affable Clifford the Big Red Dog, going from 3,292 theaters last week, to 3,261 this week, and Eternals, which adds 65 locations this week for a total of 3,230 locales. The Marvel feature debuted in early November and has amassed a domestic total of $152M. Three familiar names will no longer grace our charts as Disney has announced they will no longer be tracking Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Free Guy, and The Last Duel.

Despite the lack of wide releases opening this week, fortunately there is a film launching for nearly every movie enthusiast. The largest opening of these limited releases is Wolf. The film about a man who believes he is a wolf trapped in a human body is set to debut in 308 locations. Also new this week is Benedetta. The controversial biographical drama directed by Paul Verhoeven will open in 202 theaters. There are a plethora of other international titles debuting this week as well. The Hindi-language feature Tadap lands on North American shores this weekend, arriving in 63 cinemas. Lastly, the Spanish film Descarrilados will debut in 10 movie houses…
