Theater counts: 80 for Brady once again on top heading into Super Bowl weekend

80 for Brady

Although debuting in second place at the weekend box office, 80 for Brady again secures its place as the widest release of the week as it adds 27 locations from last week, becoming available 3,939 theaters. The comedy starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field and Rita Moreno debuted to $12.7 million in its opening weekend and currently enjoys a six day haul of $17.9 million. This week the film will not only have to contend with last weekend’s champ in Knock at the Cabin, but will see two newcomers arrive, along with the re-release of an epic feature from the 90s.

Up this week is the latest installment of the Magic Mike franchise in Magic Mike’s Last Dance. The Steven Soderbergh-directed comedy-drama film is the third in the Magic Mike trilogy and brings back Channing Tatum as the titular character, while bringing on Salma Hayek for her first role in the series. Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL went on to collect North American earnings of $113.7 and $66 million during their respective runs in 2012 and 2015. The latest chapter makes its theatrical launch in a projected 1,600 theaters—a surprisingly small number, and far fewer than the previous outings, which started out in 2,930 and 3,355 respectively. There are plenty of rumors about why it’s getting such a small rollout, but whatever the precise details the small count will clearly hold it back this weekend.

Paramount is bringing Titanic back to the big screen for its 25th Anniversary. The James Cameron tragic love story film looks to build upon its massive $2.2-billion worldwide total as it makes its comeback in 2,464 cinemas.

Finishing out the new wide releases this week is the latest from IFC Films in the horror feature, Consecration. Starting out in 762 venues, the film follows a woman who, after the suspicious death of her brother, goes to Scotland to find out what really happened.

Rounding out our top five this week is last weekend’s box office winner Knock at the Cabin, adding 15 locations for a total of 3,657 theaters this week; Avatar: The Way of Water, which enters its eighth week in 3,065 theaters; Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 3,224 cinemas; and lastly the widest release from two weeks ago, A Man Called Otto, clocking in this week in 2,824 movie houses.

Looking at the limited releases this week per usual is a plethora of worthwhile films on the big screen. Available in five locations is the Moroccan drama, The Blue Caftan. Chosen to represent Morocco in the 2023 Oscars International Feature Film category, the movie portrays a woman who slowly realizes how much her husband is moved by the presence of a young man. Also opening in limited release is the Australian romantic-comedy, Seriously Red. The film follows a woman who dreams of becoming the world’s greatest Dolly Parton impersonator, only to discover that true happiness comes when you’re being true to yourself.

Looking ahead to next week we see the launch of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The follow-up to 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp is expected to arrive in about 4,300 locations and brings back Paul Rudd as the title character.

Note: The theater count for Magic Mike’s Last Dance is an estimate. We will post an update as soon as we get an official figure from Warner Bros..
