Theater counts: Indiana Jones’ destiny will be decided in 4,600 theaters

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will launch this weekend in a massive 4,600 theaters, the widest opening since Jurassic World: Dominion, which debuted in 4,676 locations in June last year, Jones will also hit the record books as the sixth-widest opening of all time.

Dial of Destiny will unsurprisingly have the widest opening of any movie in the Indiana Jones franchise, beating Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’s 4,260-theater start in 2008. In comparison, Raiders of the Lost Ark opened in only 1,078 theaters in 1981, but was still playing in over 1,000 theaters in September, and expanded wide again for Thanksgiving and Christmas that year, and in July the following year. In all, it was playing in theaters for at least 65 weeks during its first run, according to our records—how times have changed.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken will open in a more modest 3,400 locations this weekend, placing it fourth on the theater count chart. The animated adventure will be doing battle for family audiences with Elemental, which remains in second place on the list in 3,650 movie houses.

Other movies still playing in virtually every multiplex in Norther America this weekend are last weekend’s box office winner Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which loses 380 locations to play in 3,405 this time around, and No Hard Feelings, which keeps its opening count of 3,208.

Looking ahead to next weekend, Insidious: The Red Door is set to open in around 3,000 theaters, and Joy Ride will launch in 2,700.
