Weekend projections: Wonka heads into the New Year as box office champ with $23.95-million weekend

December 31, 2023

Wonka

WonkaWarner Bros.’ Sunday-morning projection. That’s broadly in line with our pre-weekend prediction, and takes it to $134.6 million at the domestic box office. Its international numbers are even more impressive, with $244.4 million outside North America and $386.9 million globally so far.

Here’s how the domestic numbers look as of Sunday morning (click on the image for the full chart of films reporting so far)…

All movies are more-or-less lining up with our Friday predictions. The Color Purple is performing best on that score, reversing a steep decline during the week to post an expected $13 million. It’ll have $45.3 million in the bank domestically by the end of the weekend.

Anyone But You will have the best performance compared to last weekend, as the model anticipated. It’s looking like a good alternative to all the family-friendly fare and more serious dramas on offer right now. While its $25.1 million by close of business on Sunday isn’t a huge figure, it will be the second-highest grossing romantic comedy of 2023, behind My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, which could only manage $28.5 million over its entire run. Romantic comedies have really struggled in recent years, so this is a welcome minor hit.

We’ll have a full report on 2023 at the box office once we have numbers for all films, which won’t happen until Tuesday at the earliest. Our preliminary total for the year is $8.9 billion, up a very respectable 20% from last year. While $10 billion looked on the cards at one point, the strikes really put paid to that notion, and will mean there’s a significant lack of content when we look ahead to 2024.

But for now, let’s celebrate what was achieved in the past twelve months, and to all our readers—a very Happy New Year, and all the best for the year to come!
