Weekend predictions: Mean Girls expected to stay on top

The weekend after the MLK Holiday is shaping up to be a quiet one at the box office. The two significant new releases, I.S.S. and Origin aren’t expected to challenge Mean Girls for top spot, and the biggest question is how steeply the comedy-musical will decline after its $28.6-million opening weekend.

The model is almost certainly being over-generous to the returning films, which were boosted by the holiday weekend in their last outing. A final weekend tally for top 10 of something like $50 million seems pretty likely to me, although a strong hold for Mean Girls or a strong opening for I.S.S. could change the equation a little.
