Theater counts: Mean Girls three-peats on another slow week in theaters

Mean Girls

This week looks to be a near replay of last week as the winter doldrums continue. Only one new release makes its way into more than 100 theaters this week and should be no match for the current contenders. After two weeks on the big screen, Mean Girls has earned nearly $53 million from domestic showings, edging out its closest rival, The Beekeeper, at the box office for the majority of its run. The film has also taken in a respectable $16 million overseas for a global take of $69 million. This week it does drop locations, but still holds the top position with 3,544 venues.

New this week is the Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman drama Miller’s Girl. The Lionsgate release follows a talented young writer who embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web. We have yet to receive a theater count for this movie but will include it when we get one. Based on our survey of theaters, it looks as though it will debut in about 500 locations.

Rounding out the top five widest movies this week is The Beekeeper, coming in just behind Mean Girls with 3,337 locations. Still showing in a solid 3,014 cinemas is the $534-million-worldwide-earner Wonka, followed up by Migration, and Anyone But You, still widely available in 2,962 and 2,885 theaters respectively.

This week sees a plethora of films increasing viewing opportunities by adding a large number of theaters to the bill. After racking up 10 Academy Award nominations, Killers of the Flower Moon is expanding from 16 theaters last week to 941 this week, and is expected to show in over 1,000 locations globally. Also increasing its footprint from 127 cinemas last week to 1,267 this week is The Holdovers. Likewise, there will still be more chances to see Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy’s Summer blockbuster, Oppenheimer as that picture jumps to 1,262 locations after playing in 254 last week.

Looking ahead to next week we should see a nice bump at the box office with the release of Argylle. Headlined by Henry Cavill, the film contains an abundance of Hollywood talent including Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, and Bryan Cranston among others. We don’t have an official theater count estimate yet, but expect it to debut in over 3,000 theaters.
