It was a stellar weekend at the domestic box office for newcomer Final Destination: Bloodlines as the latest installment scored $51.6 million in its debut, sealing it as the fifth-biggest weekend of 2025, while topping the opening weekend earnings for the franchise. It will be a short-lived reign at the top for Bloodlines this Memorial Day weekend, however, as a duo of heavy hitters are set to make their big screen debuts.

For nearly a month now, one couldn’t look at the box office charts without seeing either Wicked or Moana 2 holding the top position. However, that all looks to change this weekend with two new franchise films clawing their way into theaters, poised to battle in an already crowded holiday season.

Weekend box office winner, Moana 2, firmly held onto its place atop the North American box office, repelling an onslaught of newcomers (and current challengers). March ended on a good note and helped 2015 maintain its lead over 2014 thanks to a trio of $100 million movies: Cinderella, Insurgent, and Home. April isn't as strong as far as depth goes, as only Furious 7 is expected to come close to $100 million at the box office. On the positive side, it could earn $100 million during its opening weekend, becoming the fastest starting film of the year, so far. On the negative side, it is expected to earn more than double the rest of the films' combined box office totals. Even worse, last April, there were two $100 million hits, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as well as two others that came close. There's no way April 2015 is going to live up to April 2014. I just hope the collapse isn't so bad that 2015 loses its lead over 2014 completely.

Red opened in the fall of 2010 and became a surprise hit. When you think of action films, you generally don't think of retirees. The combined age of the four actors who played the retired secrets agents was 250 years old when the movie came out. But because the film was something different, it won over critics and moviegoers. Needless to say, they started working on a sequel soon after. However, when Red 2 came out, it wasn't as successful at the box office or with critics. Is it really weaker? Is it so weak that it isn't worth checking out if you liked the first one?
