2012 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part I

November 23rd, 2012

This weekend is Thanksgiving and as always that means Black Friday and Cyber Monday plus 48 hours of shopping in-between. Unlike most years, I'm only halfway done with my Christmas shopping. So what recent, and not so recent releases are prime candidates for the perfect gift this year? Over the next month, we will go over several dozen possibilities with our annual Holiday Gift Guide, which is divided into into four sections. This week we start with Major Movie Releases. These are first run releases, franchise box sets, etc. However, before we get into the individual titles, we will start with an update on... More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for September 11th, 2012

September 11th, 2012

This week is again dominated with TV on DVD releases, including more than half the first page on Amazon.com's list of best-selling new releases. There is one first-run release that is doing really well: Snow White and the Huntsman - Extended Edition on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack. It's worth picking up, but not Pick of the Week material. To find contenders for that title, one must look to the TV on DVD releases, including 30 Rock: Season Six and Absolutely Fabulous: 20th Anniversary Specials. But the winner was Castle: Season Four. IMAX - International Edition

February 27th, 2005

IMAX numbers are hard to find, for international IMAX number it's doubly so. Working on the international numbers I was able to come across box office figures for half a dozen IMAX films from four markets. More...

Alien Sees Sustained Growth

February 23rd, 2005

For the second week in a row Aliens of the Deep saw a week to week increase. This week it was a modest 2.14% increase, but that does suggest there's room for its theatre count to grow. More...

Aliens Sink Faster than Expected

February 8th, 2005

After starting out slower than expected last weekend, Aliens of the Deep sank a little faster than expected this weekend, falling by nearly 24%. That's twice as steep as Ghosts of the Abyss's dropped during its second weekend of release, and nearly three times as fast as NASCAR: The IMAX Experience. More...

Aliens' Success is not as Deep

February 2nd, 2005

The latest edutainment film hit IMAX screens over the weekend, but the results for Aliens of the Deep were mixed. Its per theater average of $17,754 was the best of the weekend and beat James Cameron's last IMAX venture, Ghosts of the Abyss. However, that film played in more than 3 times the theaters.

Compared to NASCAR: The IMAX Experience, Aliens of the Deep earned a weaker per theater average, while playing in less than half the theaters. More...

DVD Releases for April 27, 2004

April 26th, 2004

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases and a few from the growing TV on DVD section. A couple of selections caught my eye this week, Love Actually - (Buy from Amazon) and Kids in the Hall - Season 1 both of which are my DVD pick of the week. More...

IMAX Update

March 11th, 2004

Several readers have written in and asked why the story in front of the IMAX top five hasn't been updated in over a year. There are two answers to this question. Firstly, the IMAX Corporation stopped publishing separate IMAX figures for movies released both in IMAX and regular format. This meant that for the biggest IMAX releases of the year, (Ghosts of the Abyss, The Matrix Reloaded, etc.) there were no box office figures. No box office figures, no box office news. More...
