I hate this time for year, because of the holidays. Due to the five-day Thanksgiving long weekend and the Christmas shipping rush, screeners are even more likely to arrive late. Most of the prime releases I'm supposed to review are still on route. It makes it hard to keep up to date on reviews, plus it makes it really hard to figure out what the Pick of the Week should be. The Help is in contention, but I want to see the Blu-ray first. In the end, I went with the The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo: Extended Trilogy Box Set on Blu-ray.

It's a pretty good week on the home market, all things considered, with two $100 million first-run releases on this week's list. On the other hand, there doesn't feel like a whole lot of depth and there are about as many featured reviews as other releases, if you count late reviews and ones where I'm still waiting on the screeners. One of these late reviews, Megamind could be the Pick of the Week, but I'm giving the Blu-ray one last chance to arrive before its release on Friday.

Last Train Home earned top spot on the per theater chart with $20,418 in its lone theater over the three-day portion of the weekend. The only other film to reach the $10,000 milestone was My Dog Tulip with $11,550, also in one theater.

It has been a full month since we had any real activity on the sales chart, and this is starting to take its toll on the overall numbers. New releases were almost nonexistent at the box office, but one of them, Brooklyn's Finest, still managed to top the sales chart this week, albeit with just 297,000 units sold and $4.63 million in consumer spending at retail.

It's a terrible week for home market releases, at least in terms of potential sales. How bad is it? As I'm writing this, the best selling release on Amazon.com is The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo on DVD. That's not to say it is a bad movie; in fact, it is the Pick of the Week, but it is a foreign language limited release, and those are not exactly known for topping the charts. The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo is the Pick of the Week, but while the DVD is selling better according to Amazon.com, the Blu-ray is the better deal.

It was another strong weekend on the per theater chart with Cyrus leading the way with $180,000 in just four theaters for an average of $45,429. This is strong enough to suggest the potential to expand wide, or at least wide enough to secure some measure of mainstream success. The overall box office leader, Toy Story 3, was next with an average of $27,385. I Am Love opened with $120,000 in eight theaters for an average of $15,188. Meanwhile, The Killer Inside Me and The Girlfriends opened with relatively similar results, the former earning $11,083 in one theater while the latter earned $10,092, also in one theater.

The overall box office leader, Iron Man 2, was also the leader on the Per Theater Chart with an impressive average of $29,252. That is below expectations, but still excellent. The only other film in the $10,000 club was Mother and Child, which opened with $10,760.

Please Give opened on top of the per theater chart with an impressive average of $23,625 in 5 theaters. This suggests significant room for expansion. With summer less than a week away, it could even be the first limited release of the season to expand enough to earn some measure of mainstream success. It wouldn't be the first Nicole Holofcener film to do so. The Human Centipede earned $12,424 in its lone theater during its opening weekend. Meanwhile, the overall box office leader, A Nightmare on Elm Street, just missed the $10,000 club with an average of $9,875.

The City of Your Final Destination rode its pedigree to first place with $24,401 in its one theater, while Exit Through the Gift Shop was very close behind with an average of $21,345 in eight theaters. The Secret in Their Eyes opened in third place with an average of $16,787 in ten theaters. Of these three films, Exit earned the best reviews. However, the Oscar winning Secret could have the best long-term success.

Another impressive hold from How to Train Your Dragon combined with a lacklustre opening for Kick-Ass to produce a second consecutive weekend where Sunday's estimates are too close to declare a weekend winner.
Paramount's estimate for Dragon is $20 million, while Lionsgate has Kick-Ass pegged at $19.75 million.
Lionsgate's second place position now may simply be because they've posted a more precise estimate.
Remarkably, there are three more movies within $5 million of top spot: Death at a Funeral opened with $17 million, which is just behind Date Night's second weekend $17.3 million (down just 31%), and Clash of the Titans did pretty well in its third weekend with an estimated $15.77 million.

No film earned more than $10,000 on the per theater chart, but The Square came the closest with an average of $8,546 in two theaters. Meanwhile, When You're Strange: A Film About The Doors was right behind with an average of $8,354 in eight theaters. That's enough to suggest that other theater owners will be willing to book these films in the coming weeks.

Not only did Clash of the Titans top the overall box office chart, it also led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $16,213. Breaking Upwards was right behind with $15,467 in one theater. Why Did I Get Married Too? was the only other film in the $10,000 club with an average of $13,591.

Greenberg easily led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $39,384 in three theaters. This was more than twice as much as the second place movie, City Island, which averaged $16,001 in two theaters. Hubble 3D was the last film in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,536 per theater, while The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo just missed that mark with an average of $9,868.

Alice in Wonderland is enjoying a third straight win on the box office charts this weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
With another $34.5 million or so in the bank, Alice will have rung up over $265 million by the end of the day.
After Avatar's domination at the beginning of the year, 2010 is really shaping up to be the year of 3D movies.

A large list of limited releases this week, including a few that are opening large for a limited release. The Runaways is the biggest limited release of the week, perhaps too big, but The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is earning the best reviews.
