Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

DVD Sales - Monster Headache on Sales Chart

October 20th, 2009

It's a bit of a mess on the DVD Sales chart this week as there are two releases that can claim top spot. We have Monsters vs. Aliens repeating on top with 721,000 units for the week giving it totals of 2.96 million units and $51.51 million. However, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released this week and sold an estimated 1.5 million units of their DVD/Blu-ray combo pack. This is where things get confusing. The studio has decided to declare these as Blu-ray units. That's enough to be the number one selling DVD for the week, and enough to be one of the best selling Blu-rays of all time. The latter is probably the reason Disney did this, and it could really boost Blu-ray player sales over the holiday shopping season. More...

DVD Releases for October 6th, 2009 - Part II

October 6th, 2009

Not a bad week for the home market with top-notch releases in nearly every category: classics, limited releases, TV on DVD, direct-to-DVD, etc. Every category, except first run releases, as the biggest theatrical hit to make its home market debut this week is Year One, which was a serious box office disappointment. There are several DVD Pick of the Week contenders, starting with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which makes its Blu-ray debut in a number of different packages (Snow White Packaging, Witch Packaging, Collector's Book, Plush Gift Set, or Limited Edition Collector's Set) Also in contention is Red Dwarf - Back to Earth on Blu-ray, Anvil! - The Story of Anvil on DVD, and Trick 'r Treat on either DVD or Blu-ray. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is obviously the best, but all four deserve DVD Pick of the Week honors. With plenty of spotlight reviews, the list has to be split into to and the first part can be found here. More...

Box Office Lacks Imagination

June 16th, 2009

It was a rough weekend at the box office as neither saturation level new release was able to live up to expectations. Even with stronger than expected holdovers, total box office receipts were still down 16.7% from last weekend to $138 million, which is 23.3% below the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has earned $4.55 billion at the box office, which is still 10.9% higher than last year's pace, but we are getting to the point where attendance might show declines, as we've lost a lot of ground in the past few weeks. Box Office Hangover Pleases Moviegoers

June 9th, 2009

We had a surprise number one at the box office this past weekend, and the films that beat Thursday's predictions outnumber those that failed to reach expected levels, both in terms of the number of films and in terms of total box office generated. This helped the industry to $165 million at the box office over the weekend; however, this was down about 0.2% from last weekend and 5.4% from the same weekend last year. That said, this is better than most were expecting, and 2009 is still way ahead of 2008's pace at $4.34 billion to $3.85 billion. More...

Weekend Estimates: Up Conquers Impressive Hangover

June 7th, 2009

Up held on to top spot on the box office chart over the weekend, based on the studio's Sunday estimates. But it was a very close thing. Only strong family business on Saturday and Sunday was enough to hold off a very impressive debut by The Hangover. The buddy comedy opened with an estimated $43.275 million, which was well ahead of most predictions, and showed that good reviews can still help bring in moviegoers. Land of the Lost, meanwhile, showed how bad reviews can still kill a movie: it opened with a paltry $19.5 million, making it the worst Summer opening of Will Ferrell's career. More...

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of June 5th, 2009

June 6th, 2009

There were three wide releases to crack the top ten this weekend, but when it comes to the best of the websites, it's a smaller Canadian movie that was the best. Waterlife's Official Site had a surprising amount of sound and animation to go with the impressive information and it is the winner of the Weekly Website Award. More...

Will New Releases Be Lost at the Box Office?

June 4th, 2009

It looks like we will have another losing weekend at the box office, as none of the three new wide releases look like they will come close to last year's winner. In fact, they might not top last year's second place film, or the sophomore stint of last week's box office champ. More...

2009 Preview: June

June 1st, 2009

So far we are one month into summer, and it looks like we will have six $100 million movies already (as I'm writing this, only two are confirmed, while three more should reach that milestone over the weekend.) However, June doesn't look as strong, either compared to last month, or the same month last year. It's not entirely bad, and we could have the bigget movie of the year opening this month, but don't expect six more $100 million movies. In fact, there's a chance we won't get half that many.
