Synopsis

Sixteen years ago, as the world was still grappling with the aftershocks of 9/11, politicians in the United States and Great Britain were angling for a motive to invade Iraq. On January 31, 2003, Katharine Gun, a 29-year-old translator at the British intelligence agency GCHQ, read a classified email that urged the blackmailing of United Nations members to ensure a yes vote on the controversial war resolution. What Gun did next—leaking the email to the public and placing herself at enormous personal and professional risk—was one of the bravest acts of a whistleblower in the last two decades.

Home Market Releases for November 26th, 2019

November 27th, 2019

MST3K

It is an even worse week on the home market than it was last week. There are two Pick of the Week contenders, MST3K: The Gauntlet and RoboCop: Limited Edition Collector’s Set. The latter has far more extras, but it has also been released on the home market far too many times. It’s not even the first time it has come out on Blu-ray. It was still a very close competitoion, but in the end, MST3K won the title of Pick of the Week. More...

Good Omens

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is easily the biggest release of the week, but it is not the best. Pick of the Week contenders include Galaxy Quest and Good Omens, as well as Alice, Sweet Alice, which arrived late. I’m going with Good Omens, but all three are must haves. More...

Theater Averages: Where’s The $10,000 Club?

September 26th, 2019

Where’s My Roy Cohn?

The $10,000 Club didn’t have many members this week and none of them were really able to shine. Where’s My Roy Cohn? did the best with an average of $10,591 in four theaters. Meanwhile the overall number one film, Downton Abbey, was close behind with an average of $10,079. More...

Theater Averages: Miles Davis is too Cool for New Releases

September 5th, 2019

Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool

It was an odd week on the theater average chart, as the number one film was a holdover. Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool’s average was down less than 0.2% to $18,222 and it did this while doubling its theater count to 2. This is very impressive and bodes well for its future. The best new release was Ne Zha, which earned an average $17,649 in 66 theaters. Animated films rarely do well in limited release and 66 theaters is a lot for a limited release, so this average is even more impressive than it looks at first glance. Finally, Official Secrets opened with an average of $16,241. More...

Weekend Estimates: Everyone Takes it Easy on Labor Day

September 1st, 2019

Angel Has Fallen

There were no wide releases this weekend, so I really thought the holdovers would hold on a lot better than they did. According to estimates, Angel Has Fallen has fallen 46% during its second weekend of release to $11.58 million and is projected to earn $15 million over the four-day weekend. A 46% sophomore stint decline would have been great, if this weren’t a holiday weekend. As it is, it’s a little disappointing, but the film will still do well enough to earn a profit. ... “Profitable disappointment.” How many times can that phrase be used this year? More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Don’t Let these Films Remain Secrets

August 30th, 2019

Before You Know It

It’s an awkward time for limited releases, as it is way too late for a summer box office run, but still way too early for Awards Season buzz. That said, there are some films on this week’s list that could do well in theaters, even if they never expand significantly. These include; Before You Know It, The Load, Ne Zha, and Official Secrets.
