Not Quite Like Heaven

December 18th, 2005

Just Like Heaven dipped at the box office falling out of the top five with $4.53 million on 1609 screens in 30 markets over the weekend for an early total of $18.04 million internationally. International Details: Flightplan has Bumpy Landing

December 11th, 2005

Flightplan fell out of the top five with $5.13 million on 2,430 screens in 38 markets for a total of $94.65 million on the international scene. It did fall from second to sixth on this week's charts, but it should still reach $100 million by this time next week. Its best market of the weekend was the U.K. where it remained in second place with $2.14 million on 416 screens for a two-week total of $6.59 million. More...

The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming!

October 9th, 2005

Company 9 opened in its native market of Russia with a stunning $5.0 million over the weekend and $6.25 million including the midweek numbers, which is better than Revenge of the Sith's opening in that market. This also means there were two films that did so well in their local markets that they managed to place in the top five overall. More...

U.K. is Virgin Territory

September 11th, 2005

The 40-Year Old Virgin topped the U.K. marked with an impressive $3.26 million on 394 screens in the U.K., but this is probably not indicative of its potential in other international markets. The film should do well in the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand, but will likely struggle in non-English speaking markets. (Germany may be an exception.) More...

War Ends World Tour with a Blast

September 4th, 2005

War of the Worlds opened in its last international market over the weekend making $3.0 million on 583 screens in China. That's about 10% more money that Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith earned, but War of the Worlds needed nearly double the number of screens. Overall the film added $4.5 million to its $345 million international total, easily the second best of the year so far. More...

Smiths Still Strong on International Scene

August 21st, 2005

Mr. and Mrs. Smith opened in first place in both the Czech Republic with $180,000 on 20 screens and in Slovakia with $50,000 on 8 screens. The film also remained in first place in France with $2.675 million, Belgium with $635,000, The Netherlands with $490,000 and Poland with $266,000. Strangest of all, the film stayed in second place for the fourth weekend in a row in Germany adding $2.12 million to its $20.6 million running tally in the market. Overall the film has made $143 million in markets where Fox is handling the distribution and may have hit $200 million overall, but there's no conformation on that yet. More...

Smiths' Summer Tour Continues

August 14th, 2005

Mr. and Mrs. Smith opened in Belgium with $1.7 million on 80 screens, easily enough for first place and had a similar result with $480,000 in Poland. It also remained in first place in France with $2.88 million, (despite falling 54% there) and in the Netherlands with $740,000. In Germany the film remained in second place for the third straight week with $3.06 million for a $17.06 million running tally. The film now have $140 million in territories where Fox is handling the distribution and $192 million overall. More...

Island Vacation

August 7th, 2005

The Island managed a couple of first place finished over the weekend, but the results were still less than impressive. In Australia the film opened with $1.404 million for a close victory while in Hong Kong it earned a disappointing $490,000 over the weekend and $520,000 including previews. It's best market continued to be South Korea with $3.167 million, down 38% from last weekend dropping to second place along the way. On the other hand, no wide openings and a mere 23% drop-off allowed the film to rise to first in New Zealand. Overall the film added $7.64 million to its $24.1 million running tally on the international scene and will opens in several markets this weekend including the U.K., Germany and Spain. More...

Constantine Continues on Top

August 6th, 2005

Despite two new openers in the top five, Constatine remained the best on the rental market with $6.76 million in DVD rentals and $620,000 in VHS rentals. Its combined total of $7.38 million was 27% lower than last week, but it wasn't the worst drop-off in the top five. More...

Late Numbers Lift Charlie into Top Five

July 31st, 2005

Early numbers had Mr. and Mrs. Smith taking fifth place on the overall international box office charts, but better than expected results has Charlie and the Chocolate Factory overtaking them $6.7 million to $5.4 million. It's biggest single market continues to be France where the film dipped just 6% during its second weekend there earning $3,533,857 for a $9,034,141 running tally. But it was even more impressive in Belgium where the film shot up by 68% to $400,000 for the weekend and $785,000 in total. The film also opened in first place in three markets, Brazil with $1.1 million on 200 screens, Holland with $625,000 on 124 screens, and South Africa with $275,000 on 41 screens. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has $13.3 million so far and opens in a couple of important markets this weekend, (The U.K. and Mexico.) More...

DVD Releases for July 26, 2005

July 25th, 2005

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases, classics and a few from the growing TV on DVD section. Another slow week in terms of first run releases as The Upside of Anger - Buy from Amazon is the only one worth picking up. For that matter, it's the only one worth renting. Also coming out this week are a couple of dubious special editions and some TV on DVD that runs the range from underappreciated classics like 3rd Rock from the Sun - Buy from Amazon to nostalgia infused duds like Gilligan's Island - The Complete Third Season - Buy from Amazon. The former is the second DVD pick of the week, the latter is not. More...

Charlie Appeals to the Sweet-tooth in its International Debut

July 24th, 2005

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opened in three French speaking markets over the weekend and while it didn't finish first, it still had a great start. In France the film earned $3,741,793 in 670 theaters for the best per theater average in the top ten. The result was similar in Belgium ($250,000) and Switzerland ($190,000), giving the film $4.2 million for the weekend. More...

The Smiths' Honeymoon in Asia Continues

July 17th, 2005

Mr. and Mrs. Smith continues its excellent run in Asia with a $2.2 million opening in 450 theatres in China. The film also added $1.8 million in South Korea for an $18 million running total in that market, (although it was pushed out of the top spot in that market. Overall the film made $4 million pushing its total to $117 million internationally and $275 million worldwide. More...

Few Films Open ahead of War's Worldwide Debut

July 3rd, 2005

Summer blockbusters continue to squeeze out the competition, so much so that the only real news is about such blockbusters. For instance, War of the Worlds managed $13.35 million during its first day of release on the international scene, which is good, but below expectations. On the other hand, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith broke another record earning $4.96 million during its preview in Japan. More...

Slump Spreads Internationally

June 26th, 2005

The international box office is suffering even more than the domestic box office is. In Germany the first six months of 2005 are down 14% compared to the same period in 2004 and Australia also saw double digit decline slipping by 12%. In Spain the total box office is down 8% and it was little better in France at 6%. The U.K. also fell, but at a much more reasonably 1.9%. More...

Corrected - Ruling the International Box Office

June 19th, 2005

Just when the International Details column was getting back to normal we have another film dominating the international scene. Mr. and Mrs. Smith led in nearly every major / midlevel market and those it didn't were mostly owned by Revenge of the Sith. Because of that there isn't as much news to tell as usual, and with Batman Begins opening worldwide this weekend and in two weeks, War of the Worlds doing the same, this trend will last until mid-July at the earliest. More...

The Largest Yard

June 12th, 2005

The Longest Yard opened in second place in Australia with $2.5 million. On the other hand, the film could only manage $750,000 on 260 screens in Mexico, not surprising since Adam Sandler has never been a big draw internationally, especially outside English speaking markets. More...

Late Figures Change Top Five

June 5th, 2005

It was a slightly busier weekend as several studios were brave enough, or foolhardy enough to try and sandwich their film between the worldwide release of Revenge of the Sith and Batman Begins, which debuts in just 10 days. With War of the Worlds' worldwide release just two weeks after that, there's very little room for smaller films to survive. More...

Sith Steal the Show

May 29th, 2005

Revenge of the Sith dominated nearly every market it opened in and in most of them it was the only new film in the top ten. Because of this there's almost no international details to report and those details that are available are single market releases. More...

Calm Before the Storm

May 22nd, 2005

It was another slow weekend for international details as few studios were brave enough, or foolish enough to try and squeeze in a release between Kingdom of Heaven and Revenge of the Sith. It was hard to find many films that earned more than $1 million over the weekend and most of the activity came from smaller releases in midlevel markets. Next weekend there could be even fewer details as Revenge of the Sith should dominate every market, but after that the summer blockbuster season should be in full swing and things should pick up. More...

Everybody was Still Kung-Fu Fighting

April 19th, 2005

Last week's winner on the per theater chart, Kung Fu Hustle, was able to repeat on top of the charts. The film dropped a mere 8% to $35,373, and this bodes very well for its wide release this Friday. Next on the list was the new film It's All Gone Pete Tong, which earned $19,717 in its lone theater, and was slightly ahead of the average for House of D at $18,186 average in two theaters. Rounding out the $10,000 club was the long-term release, Short Cut to Nirvana: Kumbh Mela, which has been in theaters for half-a-year and earned $11,102 in its lone theater this week. More...

Hustle and Bustle

April 12th, 2005

Not only did Kung Fu Hustle top the per theater charts this week, it wasn't even a close race as no other film managed to make it into the $10,000 club. The Martial Arts extravaganza earned an impressive $270,000 in just 7 theaters for a per theater average of $38,461. This, combined with superlative reviews, bodes really well for its wide release ten days from now. More...

Looking out for Number One

April 5th, 2005

Look at Me was the lone film to top $10,000 on the per theater charts this week. The French film took in nearly $70,000 on 6 screens for a $11,598 average. More...

Sinfully Good

April 4th, 2005

April started off well but not great. A strong number one film and impressive holdovers helped the market climb 7% over last weekend. But for the sixth straight weekend 2005 was behind the same weekend in 2004, this time by 17.0%. Year-to-date, 2005's box office is now at $2.02 billion, 2% behind 2004, but will hopefully do some catching up next weekend. More...

Original Sin

April 1st, 2005

April gets off to a fast start with the mostly highly anticipated film of the month debuting tonight. It should win, and win big - more than doubling its nearest competitor. More...

2005 Preview: April

April 1st, 2005

April is one of the weakest months of the year because it is so close to the massive summer box office season. A film released in late April only has one or two weeks at the box office before being crushed by the competition, so studios tend to be wary of what they release at this time. On the plus side, they tend not to dump too many duds either and it doesn't take much for any of these films to please the studios since expectations are low to begin with. More...

Ballad of the Per Theater Charts

March 29th, 2005

The Ballad of Jack and Rose topped the per theater charts by earning just shy of $60,000 in its 5 theaters, for an average of $14,865. And while it was the only film to hit $10,000, Mondovino came close with $9,840 over the weekend and $13,060 since it opened on Thursday, all in one theater. More...

Who Leads Weak Weekend Box Office

March 28th, 2005

It was not a strong weekend at the box office as we saw significant drop-offs from last weekend (14.7%), last year (17.35%) and last Easter (14.7%). The reason for this decline is simple: not one film in the top five beat expectations by a significant margin. Year-to-date 2005 has racked up $1.87 billion in ticket sales, 1% lower than the same time last year, but this April looks stronger than last year so 2005 should regain the lead before too long. More...

Tie at the Top of Per Theater Chart

March 22nd, 2005

There was a tie this weekend atop the Per Theater Chart between Melinda and Melinda, both of which were directed by the team of Woody and Allen. Melinda and Melinda earned an amazing $74,238 in its lone theater, which is the best per theater average ever for a Fox Searchlight film over a three-day weekend. More...

Anger Sees a lot of Upside

March 15th, 2005

As expected, both Millions and The Upside of Anger made it to the $10,000 club. However, they finished in the opposite order than expected. The Upside of Anger topped the charts with $211,559 in 9 theatres for an impressive average of $23,507. That bodes well for this weekend, when it expands into more than 100 theaters, and the weekend after when it goes wide. Millions, on the other hand, opened a little lower than expected but still very strong, with an average of $14,045 in just 5 theaters. The last film in the $10,000 club was Best of Youth, which saw its weekend haul climb by 37.85% to $10,325 in its loan theater. That's even more impressive when you take into account its 6 hour runtime. More...

Upside to Limited Releases

March 11th, 2005

Among the half a dozen films on this week list, there are a few that have a legitimate shot at widespread, mainstream success. Millions will probably top the per theater charts, while The Upside of Anger begins its short run in limited release before going wide in a couple of weeks. More...

2005 Preview: March

March 1st, 2005

March is a transitional month that lacks the huge hits that get people excited, and also lacks the real obvious train-wreck movies that get released during the various dumping grounds during the year. Because of that, it's a month that's hard to predict - the releases all seem so average. There are three films that have a reasonable shot at $100 million, but probably only one of those films will make it there. And that will be helped out dramatically by the Easter holidays, which falls in March this year. More...

Not Quite Like Heaven

December 18th, 2005

Just Like Heaven dipped at the box office falling out of the top five with $4.53 million on 1609 screens in 30 markets over the weekend for an early total of $18.04 million internationally. Its best opening was in Belgium where it debuted in second place with $252,000 on 40 screens over the weekend and $290,000 in total. It also had debuts in Holland with $139,000 on 57 screens over the weekend and $167,000 overall, and in Greece with $116,000 on 24 and Norway with $113,000 on 26.

More...
