Limited and Virtual Releases: Taking New Releases to the Max

May 29, 2020

Max Winslow and the House of Secrets

It’s another slow week for theatrical releases with only three films on this week’s list, including two that are going virtual. On the positive side, all three films on this week’s list are earning good reviews and they are aimed at different audiences. Fans of live-action family films should check out Max Winslow and the House of Secrets. Fans of message movies should check out Papicha. While fans of documentaries should check out Stage: The Culinary Internship.

Max Winslow and the House of Secrets - Reviews
Official Site
A live-action family film, which is a genre that has a really poor record when they earn wide releases and they almost always fail in limited release. This film does have 100% positive reviews; however, there are only five reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and the average score is just under 7 out of 10, so its Tomatometer Score is overstating its quality. The film debuts at Collins Road Theatres in Marion, Iowa this weekend, and you can check out its Official Site to see if it is playing near you in the coming weeks.

Papicha - Reviews
A film set in 1997 during the Algerian Civil War. It focuses on an 18-year old student, Nedjma, who uses her passion for fashion to fight against religious extremists who want to control what women wear. The reviews are good and the film has won a number of awards worldwide. It is getting a virtual theatrical release today, check theater listings for details.

Stage: The Culinary Internship - Reviews
Official Site
A documentary about the unpaid internships chefs are expected to do in France. Granted, these are at Michelin-starred restaurants, so you are learning from the best, and without this experience getting a job in a top kitchen is virtually impossible. The film follows a group of aspiring chefs during their nine-month contract. There are not a lot of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but the ones that are there are mostly positive, so it could be worth checking out. It is getting a virtual release and you can check out the official site to see if a theater near you is supporting it.
