Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Frozen II

February 25th, 2020

Frozen II

The first Frozen was a smash hit breaking records for the biggest global animated hit of all time. Frozen II was inevitable, but most people thought it wouldn’t quite live up to its predecessor at the box office. It smashed the record by over $150 million. Is it also better? Or does the film not live up to the hype? More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Will Forest See some Green this Weekend?

July 29th, 2016

Into the Forest

It’s a week of “good, but not great” movies as there are a number of films earning Tomatometer Scores in the 70s. Generally speaking, films usually need 80% positive reviews or better to survive in limited release. There are a couple of films with amazing reviews, Gleason and Miss Sharon Jones, but both are documentaries, so they don’t have a lot of box office potential. The film I’m most interested in is Into the Forest, which is playing on Video on Demand. More...

2015 Preview: January

January 1st, 2015

Taken 3 poster

2014 is over and for the most part, December was a soft ending to a weak year. This is bad news for two reasons. Firstly, it means the overall box office is still soft and it is unlikely that January will start strong. Secondly, last January was a great month, thanks in part to Frozen and other holdovers. The slump can't last forever and Taken 3 should help 2015 get off to a reasonably fast start and it even has a shot at $100 million. American Sniper got off to a really fast start in limited release, so it too could be a hit when it expands wide. By comparison, last January was led by Ride Along, but there were only two other films that didn't completely bomb. I want to say 2015 will start out on a winning note, but given the box office losing streak, it will likely pay to be pessimistic. More...

Featured DVD Review: Barefoot

April 20th, 2014

Barefoot is an English-language remake of Barfuss a German film. The film earned mixed reviews (both reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are positive, but the critics are not overly enthusiastic with their praise calling it a lightweight and predictable movie). Despite this, it was a hit in its native market earning just over $12 million on a $6.5 million production budget. Barefoot wasn't able to live up to its predecessor at the box office, but is it worth checking out on the home market? More...

Limited Releases on the Rise

February 21st, 2014

Kaze Tachinu poster

It's a busy week on the limited release front, not only in terms of the number of films, but also in terms of the theater counts for some of them. There are several movies opening in more than a dozen theaters. This includes The Wind Rises, which is the highest profile film of the week and its reviews are living up to its buzz. However, Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me and Child's Pose are earning even better reviews and could find an audience in limited release. More...
