Synopsis

Set in contemporary Iran in the unseen world of Iranian youth culture, filled with underground parties, sex, drugs and defiance, the story of two vivacious young girls—wealthy Atafeh and orphaned Shireen—discovering their burgeoning sexuality and, like 16 year-old girls anywhere, struggling with their desires and the boundaries placed upon them by the world they were born into.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for December 13th, 2011

December 12th, 2011

It is a surprisingly strong week on the home market with two $100 million hits, Kung Fu Panda 2 on Blu-ray Combo Pack or Rise of the Planet of the Apes on Blu-ray, both of which are contenders for pick of the week. There are also several smaller releases that are also contenders for that title like The Guild: Season Five on DVD. But in the end, I gave that honor to Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame on Blu-ray. More...

Awards Season: Early Nods Speak Volumes

November 30th, 2011

As it does every year, Independent Spirit Award nominations kick off the unofficial start of Awards Season. This year there were two films that topped the list of nominations: The Artist and Take Shelter. Both of those films earned five nominations, but they weren't the only films to be singled out. Per Theater Chart: Weather Dampens Specialty Releases

August 30th, 2011

Normally I disregard weather effects on the box office; after all, even big storms generally only affect a small fraction of the population of the domestic market. However, Irene caused theaters in New York City to be closed for Saturday and Sunday, which had a huge impact on limited releases and none of the new ones reached that $10,000 mark on the per theater chart. Red State did earn that much in its lone theater over the weekend, while the closest any new release came was Higher Ground with an average of $7,165 in three theaters. More...

Weekend Estimates: Help Top Again as Storm Batters Box Office

August 28th, 2011

With many East Coast theaters closed on Saturday and Sunday thanks to Hurricane Irene, and a weak selection of new movies in the first place, this is shaping up to be one of the worst weekends of 2011. In fact, it could end up as the worst, depending on how Sunday's business works out. There's a lot of uncertainty in this week's estimates because of incomplete reports for Saturday and the unknown impact of the storm in the North East. One thing seems certain, though: The Help will top the chart again. It is expected to earn another $14.3 million, according to Disney, for a total of $96.6 million. It is still enjoying the best per theater average in the top ten, so it will stay in theaters for a while. More...

Few Limited Releases are Looking Bright

August 26th, 2011

While there are many limited releases coming out this week, very few of them are earning good reviews. It could be a bad week on the per theater chart. Higher Ground has the best shot at success, but Circumstance could do well. Meanwhile, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil opens On Demand today before hitting theaters next month and coming out on DVD and Blu-ray in November. It looks awesome and I can't wait to see it. More...
