March 7th, 2010

The Numbers' annual Oscar polls have proved to be remarkably accurate predictors of the final results on Oscar night. We call results based on the hundreds of The Numbers readers who vote in our Predict the Oscars competition.

We've received all the votes now, and are ready to make predictions in all categories. Percentage figures are the percentage of The Numbers readers who believe a movie or performance will win. They are a rough guide to how likely a particular movie is to win in a category. More...

DVD Sales: New Releases Do Bad

February 11th, 2010

While there were several new releases on the sales chart, including a new number one, sales were soft as a whole. The new number one film, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, only sold 581,000 units and generated $11.03 million in opening week sales. More...

Awards Season: Avatar Not Hurting for Oscar Nominations

February 2nd, 2010

Oscar nominations were announced at 5:38 this morning, continuing a tradition that have never been adequately explained to me. (Why so early in the morning? Does earning an Oscar nomination become sweeter if people have to wake you up to congratulate you?) Leading the way in nominations were Avatar and The Hurt Locker, both of which pick up nine nods each, many of them in the same categories. More...

January 25th, 2010

The Directors Guild of America release their nominations over three days stretched out over a week. On the other hand, Feature Film merely enforces the trends we've seen throughout Awards Season. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 12th, 2010

January 11th, 2010

As it is usually true at this time of year, there are very few major releases hitting the home market this week. Most of the films on this week's list that opened wide were critics and / or box office disappointments, but at least there are a number of smaller films to pick up the slack. This includes Big Fan, which features what should be a star making performance by Patton Oswald, but the DVD isn't exactly loaded with extras. That's not an issue with Moon, as both the DVD and the Blu-ray are loaded with extras. The best release of the week is arguably The Hurt Locker and both its DVD and Blu-ray are Pick of the Week material. However, it is likely that it will be joined by Transformers - Season 2 - Volume 2, once the screener arrives. More...

Awards Season - Looking Up for the PGA

January 6th, 2010

The Producers Guild of America announced their nominations this week, and while there are only three categories for theatrical releases, they tend to be quite accurate predictors for the Oscar nominations. This is great news for Up, which picked up nominations in two of the three categories. More...

Awards Season: SAG Splits Up the Nominations

December 17th, 2009

The SAG nominations were announced this week, and the trend of the year continues with Up in the Air leading the way, but no one film dominating. This time around Up in the Air was in a three-way tie with Inglourious Basterds and Precious, which makes the race even more interesting. More...

Awards Season - Golden Globe Nominations are Up in the Air

December 16th, 2009

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominations this week, but looking over the list of films chosen, it is hard to declare any one film as the big winner. Up in the Air did pick up six Golden Globe nominations, including several of the most prestigious nominations, but it is far from the only major player. More...

Making Noise on the Per Theater Chart

August 18th, 2009

It Might Get Loud led the way on the Per Theater Chart with an average of $13,240 in seven theaters, which suggests some potential for expansion. District 9 was relatively close behind with an average of $12,251. More...

Adam Arrives First on Per Theater Chart

August 4th, 2009

Summer might be ending, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of activity on the per theater chart. Placing first was Adam with an average of $17,094 in four theaters. This suggests at least some potential to expand. The same can be said of The Cove and its average of $14,410; however, as a documentary, there is a lower upper limit to its box office potential. Thirst was right behind with an average of $13,972, which is better than Let the Right On In opened with. Finally, (500) Days of Summer remained in the $10,000 club for one more week with an average of $10,439 in 266 theaters. More...

Per Theater Chart is In the Loop

July 28th, 2009

In the Loop lead the way on the per theater chart with an impressive average of $23,983, and with its reviews, it should be able to expand significantly. (500) Days of Summer landed in second place with an average of $19,244, which is about a third less than its opening weekend average. But it is now playing in 85 theaters, which is more than triple its opening weekend theater count, so this is a fantastic hold. Those were the only films to top $10,000 on the per theater chart, but The Ugly Truth came relatively close with $9,579. More...

Summer's Hot on the Per Theater Chart

July 21st, 2009

(500) Days of Summer led the way on the per theater chart with an outstanding average of $30,907, which was nearly twice as much as the second placed film. That honor went to the overall box office champion film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which earned an average of $17,997. Alien Trespass skyrocketed into third place with $14,405 in one theater thanks to special screenings at the Fantasia Montreal Film Festival. The final film to reach the $10,000 mark was A Woman in Berlin with $12,439, also in one theater. More...

Life's a Beach on the Per Theater Chart

July 14th, 2009

There was a mix of old and new on the top of the Per Theater Chart this week with Humpday opening in first place with an average of $14,369. The Beaches of Agnes was in second place with $13,584 in one theater during its second weekend of release. The overall box office leader, Brüno, was in third place with $11,110. Meanwhile, last week's per theater champ, The Hurt Locker, just managed to remain in the $10,000 club with $10,686, but it also expanded significantly, which makes this achievement even more impressive. More...

Weekend Estimates: Bruno Dazzles on Debut

July 12th, 2009

Sacha Baron Cohen showed he is no one-hit-wonder over the weekend as Bruno topped the box office chart with an impressive $30.4 million, according to Universal's estimate, released on Sunday morning. That's marginally better in total dollars than Borat's $26.5 million debut, although the 2006 release played in only 837 theaters against 2,756 this time around. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs dropped an impressive 31% to an estimated $28.5 million, helped in part by a comparison that includes the July 4 holiday last weekend, which dragged sales down across the board. Fox, however, will be encouraged by the performance, and the family pic continues to do incredibly well internationally. More...

Per Theater Chart Hurting for New Releases

July 7th, 2009

Only three films managed to reach the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart this week, and no new releases were able to top The Hurt Locker. That film led the way with an average or $14,578 in nine theaters, but it will need to strike fast if it wants to expand significantly. The Beaches of Agnes was the best of the new releases, opening with an average of $10,650 in two theaters. Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs opened with an average of $10,171, while the overall number one film, Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen, just missed the $10,000 market with an average of $9,995. More...

Hurt and Revenge Rise on the Per Theater Chart

June 30th, 2009

The Hurt Locker did something most films about the Iraq War have not been able to do: succeed at the box office. During its opening weekend it earned close to $150,000 in just four theaters for an average of $36,338. The overall number one film, Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen, managed second place with an average of $25,736, and nearly double that since Wednesday. Meanwhile, last week's number one film on the per theater average, Whatever Works, landed in third with $10,280. More...

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of June 26th, 2009

June 28th, 2009

For a weekend that features what could be the biggest movie of the year, the list of movie websites is merely average. Then again, I've noticed this trend for a few years that movie websites have stagnated in quality. I blame Running Scared. The website was so popular, that it crashed the server, but the movie itself bombed. It was at this point that I believe studios realized that having a popular website doesn't mean a movie will be a hit. Since then, the amount of effort put into websites has dropped off with more sites featuring less sound and animation; even sites for wide releases are rather cookie cutter at the moment lacking interactivity or creativity. This is part of the reason why I'm strongly considering phasing out this column. There's very few sites worth writing about, and it would give me more time to concentrate on reviewing DVDs, which takes up a considerable amount of my time already. I haven't finalized my decision, so if you have any thoughts, e-mail me. More...

Limited Releases are Not Hurting for Theaters

June 26th, 2009

There are only half-a-dozen limited releases on this week's list, but half of them are opening in more than a dozen theaters. Opening in more theaters is not always good for a limited release, and this could be the case this week. Of the film's on this week's list, The Hurt Locker has the best reviews and the best chance at finding an audience. More...

Awards Season - Ballast, River, and Rachel Getting Nominations

December 2nd, 2008
