DVD and Blu-ray Releases for May 13th, 2014

May 13, 2014

It's a weird week on the home market. There are more first-run releases on this week's list than last week, as well as some TV on DVD releases and others. That said, it still feels very shallow. Even coming up with a list of ten new releases will include some filler. According to Amazon.com, I, Frankenstein is the biggest selling new release of the week. However, Her is the best new release of the week and the Blu-ray Combo Pack is the Pick of the Week.

Note: This DVD made its home market debut on the 22nd of April.

Big Bad Wolves - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An Israeli horror film that earned strong buzz, but bombed at the box office. Is it worth checking out now that it has hit the home market? Check out our review to find out.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Billy Joel: A Matter Of Trust - The Bridge To Russia: The Concert, Book of Bantorra: Complete Collection, Dave Clark Five & Beyond: Glad All Over, Dio: Live In London Hammersmith Apollo 1993, Evilspeak, Fast & Furious 6-Movie Collection, Final Exam, Flying Tigers, Hellboy Animated: 20th Anniversary, Mortal Kombat Franchise, Ocean's Trilogy Collection, Overlord (Criterion Collection), Sleeping Beauty, Special ID, and The Zombie Horror Picture Show
Not a lot in the list of secondary releases on the Blu-ray that I'm particularly interested in. I like Hellboy and Mortal Kombat.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: I, Frankenstein and Stalingrad
Only two 3D releases this week. The biggest one was a box office flop, while the other was a huge hit in its native Russia, but not here.

Crocodile Dundee / Crocodile Dundee II - 2-Disc Blu-ray Pack - Buy from Amazon
Crocodile Dundee was a huge surprise hit and a critical smash. Crocodile Dundee II was still a hit, but wasn't as well received by critics. This week they came out on a two-disc Blu-ray set, but is it worth the money? Read our review for my opinion.

Dragon Ball Z: Season 4 - Buy from Amazon
An Anime series on the first page of the new releases. That's a sign it is a slow week.

Eastbound & Down: Season 4 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I've said it before, but I think Danny McBride works best in small doses, so I never got into this series. It ended after four seasons, so fans will be missing it, but at least they can complete their collections this week.

Generation Iron - Buy from Amazon
A documentary about bodybuilding. The reviews are excellent and if you are interested in this subject matter, then it is worth picking up. If you just like documentaries in general, it is at least worth a rental.

God Love Uganda - Buy from Amazon
A documentary about the anti-gay legislation be adopted by Uganda and its roots in the American Evangelical movement. One of the best movies of last year and easily worth picking up.

Haganai Next: Season 2 (Limited Edition DVD/Blu-ray Combo) - Buy from Amazon
An Anime series on the first page of the new releases. That's a sign it is a slow week. This week there are two Anime releases on the first page.

Her - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
One of the best movies of 2013 and a contender for Pick of the Week based on its reviews alone. (Well, it's reviews and the lack of competition.) Extras include a making of featurette, a featurette that discusses the theme more, and a montage of scenes from the movie centered on that theme. That's not a lot, but that's the only disappointing part of the release.

I, Frankenstein - Buy from Amazon: DVD or 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack
One of the worst movies of the year. It doesn't matter what extras are on the DVD or the Blu-ray (two audio commentary tracks and two making of featurettes) because with a Tomatometer Score of just 4% positive, you should skip it.

Longmire: Season 2 - Buy from Amazon
A crime drama on A&E that follows a veteran cop, Robert Taylor, whose wife was murdered a year before the series began. The reviews are strong, but I'm sure fans would like a Blu-ray release.

Marvel Knights: Wolverine Weapon X: Tomorrow Dies Today - Buy from Amazon
The latest Marvel Motion Comic released by Shout! Factory. I haven't gotten a screener from them for a while, but I liked all of the Motion Comics they sent me and I might pick this one up myself, because I like Deathlok as a character.

Orange Is the New Black: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I was hoping to get a screener for this TV show, as I've heard great things about it, but it hasn't shown up so far. Extras include audio commentary tracks on two episodes and a handful of featurettes. It's worth picking up.

Paw Patrol - Buy from Amazon
A Nickelodeon cartoon series TV on DVD release is in the top five, according to Amazon.com. That's a huge sign how slow the week is.

Perry Mason Movie Collection Volume 2 - Buy from Amazon
I'm still waiting for the screener for this release, but I hope it arrives soon. Volume One never arrived, so I'm a little worried.

Royal Shakespeare Company: Richard II - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
David Tennant stars in this adaptation of the Shakespeare play. The reviews are mostly great, so if you are a fan of either the actor and / or of the play, it is worth picking up.

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron - Blu-ray Combo Pack - Buy from Amazon
This was an early film from Dreamworks Animation. It earned an Oscar nomination, but wasn't a big hit in theaters. It is making its Blu-ray debut this week, but has it aged well? And is the Blu-ray worth picking up? Read our review to find out.

Stalingrad - Buy from Amazon: DVD or 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack
A Russian film about the titular World War II battle. It was a huge hit in its native market, but here its reviews were mixed and it struggled to find an audience on IMAX screens. The only extra on the DVD or the Blu-ray is a making of featurette, so I think unless you really like fictional romances stapled onto historic events, a rental will be enough.

Stranger by the Lake - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
A gay-themed murder thriller. The film earned outstanding reviews, but failed to find an audience in theaters. Then again, it is a gay-themed foreign-language thriller, so that's a niche market of a niche market, so earning over $300,000 isn't a bad limited release run. Extras include two short films, interviews, and deleted / alternative scenes. It is worth picking up.

Strawberry Shortcake: Fun Under the Sun - Buy from Amazon
I might get the screener for this release. I'm not part of the target demographic, but I've seen enough similar shows to know this is one of the better of the genre.

That Awkward Moment - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film earned really bad reviews and struggled at the box office opening in third place. Extras on the DVD include an interview featurette and character profiles, while the Blu-ray has a behind-the-scenes featurette and outtakes. I think it is safely skippable.

Note: This DVD made its home market debut on the 22nd of April.

Tin Can Man - Buy from Amazon
A low-budget Irish horror movie that earned a lot of buzz, but took a long time to get out here. Was it worth the wait? Check out our review for my opinion.

Wrestlemania XXX - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Lost interest in professional wrestling a long, long time ago, so I can't tell you anything about this show.
