Per Theater Chart is Feeling Green

March 7th, 2012

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax was surprisingly strong during its opening and that helped it win the race on top of the per theater chart with an average of $18,830. The only other two films in the $10,000 club, Being Flynn and Boy, were neck-and-neck at $10,998 and $10,622 respectively.

Only one of the rest of the new limited releases even came close to $10,000, and that was The Salt of Life with an average of $9,588 in two theaters. Lost Woods was well back with an average of $4,480 in 13 theaters. The widest limited release of the week was Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie!, but it struggled with an average of $3,645 in 24 theaters. Art Is... The Permanent Revolution struggled even more with $2,718 in one theater. Last Days Here was right behind with $2,671, also in one theater. This Is Not A Test was also close with an average of $2,522 in five theaters. Let the Bullets Fly only made an average of $2,257, also in five theaters. Paan Singh Tomar just avoided the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,057 in ten theaters. The Snowtown Murders was not as lucky with just $1,273 in its lone theater. Falling Away earned an average of $642 in just two theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Goon powered past $2 million and it is more than halfway to $3 million, which is very impressive for a Canadian film and about equivalent to $25 million in the United States. That's not a lot compared to most Hollywood releases, but it is excellent compared to most Indie films.
  • A Separation had its best weekend in its run pushing past $3 million and it is at nearly $4 million already.
  • The Artist topped $35 million over the weekend and will hit $40 million by this time next week.
  • The Descendants remains the best limited release of 2011 surpassing $80 million in its run. It is now just ahead of Zookeeper and it is catching up to Immortals.
