Per Theater Chart: Utopia for Detropia

September 12, 2012

There were three new releases that topped $10,000 on the per theater chart. Detropia led the way with $17,414 in one theater. It should expand, but as a documentary, it will likely not expand wide. Hello I Must Be Going earned an average of $11,952 in two theaters, while Keep the Lights On was right behind with an average of $11,115 in five theaters.

There were a couple other new limited releases that did rather well. Girl Model made $6,864 in one theater, while For Ellen made $6,100, also in one theater. The latter film was a Wednesday opening and its total debut was $7,282. Bachelorette struggled with an average of $3,862, but it was playing in 47 theaters, so that is a mitigating factor. Eye of the Storm was right behind with an average of $3,684 in seven theaters, which placed it just ahead of The Inbetweeners Movie's average of $3,596 in ten. Branded bombed with roughly $240,000 in 307 theaters for an average of just $784. It was playing in way too many theaters for a limited release, so this result was not a surprise. Toys in the Attic was a family film that was playing in too many theaters and was limited to matinees in a lot of theaters, which partially explains its per theater average of $738. [REC]3 Genesis was further behind with an average of $375 in eight theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Queen of Versailles did get to $2 million, but this is likely as far as it will go.
  • Robot and Frank also reached $2 million over the weekend, but its chances at $3 million are closer to 100%.
  • Beasts of the Southern Wild surpassed $10 million, which is fantastic for a limited release.
  • After topping $20 million on Monday 2016: Obama's America made it to $25 million over the weekend, while getting to $30 million should be a breeze.
