Per Theater Chart: Hobbit Reaches the Top

December 18th, 2012

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey easily led the way on the per theater chart. In fact, it was the only film to top $10,000. The film pulled in an average of $20,919, which is great for this time of year. The best new release was Let Fury Have the Hour, which only managed $3,386 in its lone theater.

Most of the rest of the new limited releases were not as strong as hoped. The Met Live in HD: Aida only managed an average of $3,250, but it was playing special engagements in 800 theaters, so its per showing average would be quite strong comparatively speaking. Excellent reviews couldn't help Any Day Now as it earned an average of $2,531 in 16 theaters. Save the Date missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,878 in 2 theaters, while The End of Time was $2 behind with an average of $1,876, also in 2 theaters. Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet earned great reviews, but that couldn't save it as it only managed an average of $160 in 2 theaters. On the other hand, it did come out on DVD on Tuesday, so it is not surprising people waited.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • A Late Quartet hit $1 million over the weekend, but that's as far as it will go.
  • Likewise, while The Other Son reached $1 million before the weekend, it won't get any further.
  • Hitchcock earned more than $1 million over the weekend pushing its running tally past $3 million. Its per theater average is low enough that it likely will start losing theaters. It should still get to $5 million, but it won't get beyond that.
  • As expected, The Sessions got to $5 million since this time last week. However, unless it turns its Award Season nominations into ticket sales, that's as far as it will go.
  • Silver Linings Playbook remained just outside of the top ten, but was buoyed by Award Season nominations topping $15 million over the weekend. At this pace, $20 million is very likely while you can't dismiss doubling that, if it turns nominations into wins.
