Jurassic World is the Alpha Male of the Theater Averages

June 18, 2015

The Wolfpack

It's a strange week on the theater averages chart. The number one film was Jurassic World with an average of $48,855. This is the best average for a wide release in 2015 and the third best average for a film released in 2015 and the fifth best average during 2015. Second place went to The Wolfpack with an average of $21,960 in two theaters. This is amazing for a documentary. The only other film in the $10,000 club was Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which debuted in 15 theaters, a lot for a limited release, and earned an average of $13,100. This suggests room to expand over the coming weeks.

The rest of the new limited releases all bombed. Hamari Adhuri Kahani was playing in 67 theaters and earned an average of $1,959. On the positive side, it is a Bollywood movie, so it didn't need to be a hit here to make money. Madame Bovary was playing in 15 theaters and on Video on Demand, which explains its average of $1,389. Set Fire to the Stars was only playing in one theater, which is one theater more than it said on the official site, and earned $1,132.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Theater Averages Chart alumni:

  • Wild Tales topped $3 million just before the weekend. It was just released on the home market, so this will be as far as it will go.
  • I'll See You in My Dreams made it to $2 million before the weekend and $3 million on Monday.
  • Love and Mercy reached $3 million before the weekend and $4 million over the weekend. It is not going to expand significantly beyond where it is, but it should still have no trouble $5 million before next weekend.
  • Far from the Madding Crowd became the latest limited release to get past $10 million. This is more than some wide releases have finished with recently, like Blackhat and Mortdecai.
