Home Market Releases for January 26th, 2016

It is a really slow week on the home market this week. Not only are there very few releases, none of them are top-tier. The biggest release of the week is Goosebumps, but it is only good and not great. There are plenty of films worth picking up (The Assassin, Chi-raq, The Wrong Man, etc.) but none truly rise to Pick of the Week level.

There is only one 3D release this week, but it is the biggest release of the week.
I was hoping to get a screener for this release, but it has not yet arrived. The reviews are good and I really like Shu Qi in the few things I've seen her in. The extras are limited to just one behind-the-scenes featurette. It is still worth picking up, but not not a Pick of the Week contender.

The latest from Spike Lee and one of his best since Inside Man. Unfortunately, it didn't perform well at the box office and the only extras on the DVD / Blu-ray are a featurette, music video, and deleted scenes. Still worth picking up, but not quite a pick of the week contender.
Looks like there's going to be a shake-up at the top of Doctor Who with Steven Moffat leaving. And with a new head writer will come a new Doctor, most likely. For fans, this means either a chance to revitalize the show, which has been sagging, or an acceleration of the decline. It is obviously too soon to tell which it will be, but that hasn't stopped some from speculating.

When this movie was first announced, a lot of people shook their heads in disbelief. I can understand, as there's been too many adaptations of TV shows from that era and an anthology show like Goosebumps didn't seem like a great idea. However, it actually earned good reviews and did quite well at the box office. I'm hoping to get a screener, but it is late at the moment. The extras look good, with the usual making of featurettes, deleted scenes, etc., but no audio commentary track. It's worth picking up, but not really a Pick of the Week contender.
The ninth TV movie in the Jesse Stone franchise. These films tend to have ... deliberate passing, but are still worth checking out.

The sixth and final season in this British class drama hits the home market this week. The show started earning amazing critical praise and while the middle two seasons were not as well liked, it appears the show ended on a high note. Or perhaps I should say, "ended" as a movie seems very likely at this point.

A documentary about and by Ravi Patel, who meets the woman of his dreams but is worried his family might complicate the romance. The reviews are among the best of this week's releases and it did amazing business in limited release for a documentary. That said, there appears to be no extras on the DVD, which limits its value a little. It is still worth picking up, but it is not a contender for Pick of the Week.

Crimson Peak is the biggest of the VOD releases this week. I think it is worth picking up, rather than just renting, but I really like Guillermo Del Toro's work. Mountain Men feels like a better pure rental.
One of Hitchcock's films and an excellent movie, but not one of his best known. It is based on real life story of a man falsely accused of several robberies. There is only one extra on the Blu-ray, a 20-minute making of featurette, but that's still more than enough to be worth picking up.
