Kung Fu Panda

There was only one film in the $10,000 this week, Kung Fu Panda 3, which earned an average of $10,438. The best limited release was Rabin The Last Day, which opened with $7,940 in one theater.

Most of the rest of the new limited releases bombed. The only new release that didn't miss the Mendoza Line was 2016 Oscar Shorts, which earned an average of $4,549 in 123 theaters. The franchise keeps growing at the box office. Saala Khadoos only managed an average of $1,099 in 70 theaters. Lazer Team earned more than $1 million during its TUGG runs, but only managed an average of $944 in 115 screens over the weekend.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Theater Average alumni:

  • Lazer Team earned $1 million during its special TUGG screenings. However, given how poorly it did in regular screenings over the weekend, it won't get any further.
  • 45 Years crossed $1 million over the weekend and it has an excellent shot at $2 million or more.
  • Ip Man 3 also crossed $1 million over the weekend. It will get to $2 million this coming weekend.
  • The Danish Girl did finally get to $10 million over the weekend. That's likely as far as it will go.
  • Brooklyn reached $30 million over the weekend. This is a milestone Point Break failed to reach and that film cost $100 million to make.
  • The Big Short got all the way to $60 million over the weekend putting it in the top 50 for 2015.
