Thursday Night Previews: The Purge Takes Care of the Competition with $3.64 million

July 1, 2016

The Purge: Election Year

The Purge: Election Year earned the best Thursday previews out of the three wide releases with $3.64 million last night. This is the best in the franchise, just beating the $3.44 million the first film managed and well ahead of the $2.64 million the second film pulled in. On the downside, the film's reviews have slipped to just 57% positive. That's still good, for this genre and it might be a bigger than expected hit.

The Legend of Tarzan came in second with $2.55 million. A monstrous $180 million production budget and 34% positive reviews will likely end up earning less than previously anticipated at the box office.

The BFG only managed $775,000, which sounds terrible at first glance. However, it is a family film aimed at a younger audience, so you have to compare it to similar films. For example, The Angry Birds Movie earned $800,000 in previews and will finish with close to $100 million. The Jungle Book took in $4.2 million, but also earned more than $100 million during its opening weekend and no one was expecting it to match that figure. It should bounce back on Friday, so we will have a better idea where it will finish on Saturday.
