International Box Office: Cold War has Hot Opening with $44 million

July 13th, 2016

Cold War 2

Cold War 2 opened in first place with $44.25 million in four markets over the weekend. Nearly all of its opening came from China, where it made $44.08 million over the weekend and $44.78 million, including previews. It also opened in the U.K. earning $128,000 in 14 theaters, which is great for a limited release there.

Big Fish and Chinese Flowering Crabapple was next with $33.84 million over the weekend in China and $34.13 million including previews.

Ice Age: Collision Course was right behind with $32.2 million in 25 markets for an early international total of $57.7 million. This week, the film opened in first place in Brazil with $4.5 million and in Argentina with $3.7 million. However, the franchise has always been strong in Latin America. For example, Continental Drift opened with $6.12 million and $3.85 million in those two markets respectively.

Finding Dory fell to fourth place with $29.7 million in 40 markets for totals of $220.2 million internationally and $643.2 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in South Korea with $6.22 million on 1,091 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.35 million. This is significantly better than the $4.67 million / $5.14 million Inside Out opened with in that market. The film opened in Mexico and Japan this weekend, while it hits the U.K. before the end of the month. However, it doesn’t finish its run until the end of September, so it will be a while before we know where its worldwide total will end up.

The Legend of Tarzan rounded out the top five, maybe. The film pulled in $27 million in 46 markets over the weekend for totals of $54 million internationally and $136 million worldwide. The film was a much bigger hit domestically than expected, but it has been more average internationally. For example, the film earned first place in Mexico with $4.50 million, but had to settle for second place in the U.K. with $4.62 million and in Australia with $3.24 million.

So Young 2: Never Gone was so close to fifth place that we can’t be sure it didn’t actually earn fifth place. The film opened in third place in China with $26.54 million over the weekend and $26.92 million including previews.
