Friday Estimates: Rogue One and Sing perform a duet with $22.78 million and $13.07 million

December 24, 2016

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story grew by 36% on Friday, earning $22.78 million for a running tally of $244.77 million. It has now overtaken Doctor Strange for ninth place on the yearly chart. By comparison, The Force Awakens rose by 80% on this day in its run, but this day in its run was Christmas Day. As I said before, we won’t be able to really compare numbers until after Boxing Day.

Sing also grew by 36%, earning $13.07 million for a three-day total of $33.68 million. Like every film, it will fall tomorrow, but it is ahead of our predictions and there’s no way Universal isn’t happy with these numbers.

Passengers rose 40% to $4.5 million for a three-day total of $11.83 million. It is now ahead of Assassin’s Creed, both in terms of daily numbers and running tally. This will allow Sony to breathe easier, but it is still below expectations and way below where the film needed to be to pay for its $110 million production budget.

Why Him? opened in fourth place with $3.92 million, but I’m not sure it will stay there. The film’s reviews are 41% positive, which is not going to help its legs. Neither will its B+ CinemaScore. These scores are not fatal either, but as the only new release on Friday, it will likely suffer the steepest decline on Saturday and that could allow Assassin’s Creed to overtake it for fourth place.

Speaking of Assassin’s Creed, it grabbed fifth place with $3.72 million on Friday for a three-day total of $11.21 million. The film cost $125 million to make, so there’s little hope it will break even any time soon. It would have to have long legs, even compared to most Christmastime releases, plus it would have to be a major hit internationally. Given its reviews and its B+ CinemaScore, the former seems unlikely. Furthermore, films that struggle domestically usually struggle internationally, because it has a reputation as a bomb that it has to overcome to win over audiences.

Moana only rose by 9%, but it also lost nearly 9% of its theater count, so that explains why it wasn’t able to hold up as well as other films. That said, it should bounce back on Christmas day and remain in the top ten for the rest of the year.
