2016 - Awards Season: PGA - Nominations

January 11, 2017

Deadpool

The Producers Guild of America finally finished announcing their nominations. (They spread out their announcements for reasons I’ve never quite understood.) Most of the films on this list have already earned more than a few previous nominations. We appear to be settling into a predictable Awards Season.

The categories and nominees are...

Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures

Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures

Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures

Notes and Reactions...

  • La La Land remains the top film this Awards Season. At this point, if it doesn’t earn at least half a dozen Oscar nominations, it would be stunning. If it earns the most Oscar nominations this year, I won’t be surprised at all.
  • This is the third Awards Season group to give Deadpool at least one nomination. This has gone from a pleasant surprise to a likely omen for an Oscar nomination. I really hope this is the case.
  • The Secret Life of Pets is the only animated film that I don’t think will earn an Oscar nomination. I think it will be skipped in favor of My Life as a Zucchini, or some other smaller, more “art house” animated film.
  • The documentary category remains up in the air. We’ve seen too many films only getting one or two major nominations to predict the Oscar nominations. However, this is common for Awards Season, as Best Documentary is usually unpredictable right up to the end.
  • On a side note, Girl Meets World was canceled last week, but was nominated for Outstanding Children’s Program just hours later. It is also the highest rated original show on the Disney Channel, so there must have been budget concerns that cost the show its fourth season.
