Home Market Releases for August 8th, 2017

August 8th, 2017

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

Summer has likely ended at the box office, while it is about to begin on the home market. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is the first of the summer monster hits to come out on the home market. Granted, it is only out on Video on Demand this week, but it is still a contender for Pick of the Week. There are a couple of other contenders, including Cinematic Titanic: The Complete Collection and Re-Animator: Limited Edition 2-Disc Blu-ray, but in the end, I went with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.

Blindspot: Season 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Jaimie Alexander stars as a woman with no memories of who she is, but she is covered in tattoos and these tattoos are clues to solve crimes. The first season’s reviews were good, but not great, while there are not enough reviews for the second season to get a Tomatometer Score. That’s not a good sign, because it means the vast majority of critics didn’t even bother to review season two. Extras on the DVD / Blu-ray includes two featurettes, two Comic-con featurettes, deleted scenes, and outtakes. If you really like the show, then it is worth picking up, but if you were more moderate about your opinion, then this is not enough

Cinematic Titanic: The Complete Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I found out this was coming out a couple of weeks ago and I almost pre-ordered it immediately. Then I realized I already own all 12 movies. If you don’t own them and you are a fan of MST3K, RiffTrax, etc., then it is a must-have and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
The film earned some of the worst pre-release buzz I’ve ever seen, but I mostly ignored it, because it was internet buzz and the people complaining about the reboot were never going to see the movie regardless. However, the film bombed in theaters, so maybe the buzz had an effect. Or maybe it was the 20% positive reviews that killed its chances. (Granted, young kids don’t tend to read reviews, but their parents do.) Even if you liked the franchise, you are better off skipping this one.

The Dinner - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Two estranged brothers and their wives meet for dinner after their two teenage sons commit a horrible crime that shocked the public. Their sons were caught on camera, but not identified, so they have to figure out what to do. The film has a great cast, but it only earned mixed reviews and bombed in theaters. The only extra on the DVD / Blu-ray is an audio commentary track, so I would wait till you can rent it on VOD.

Elvis Presley Blu-ray Double-Shot - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Clambake and Frankie and Johnny
Elvis Presley was in a few good movies during his acting career. These two were not among them. Unless you are a really big fan of Elvis, these two Blu-rays are not worth picking up.

The Exception - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film is set in Holland at the onset of World War II. A German soldier has to investigate an exiled monarch to see if he is being spied on. Complications ensue. The reviews were good, but not good enough to thrive in limited release. It is worth checking out on the home market, but not a contender for Pick of the Week. Call it a solid purchase.

Fargo: 20th Anniversary Steelbook Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This film is an absolute classic and if you don’t have it on Blu-ray yet, then it is a must buy. On the other hand, it has been released on Blu-ray in the past and being a double-dip hurts its value. (Also, I’m not a fan of Steelbooks, as they don’t look good mixed in with other DVDs / Blu-rays.)

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I like the concept of the King Arthur legend mixed with a British gangster flick, but the execution was seriously flawed and it bombed in theaters. There are plenty of extras are on DVD / Blu-ray, but the reviews are so weak that even renting is too much to ask.

Lego DC Super Hero Girls: Brain Drain - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Eventually the Lego Animated franchise is going to overstay its welcome, because it is crowding the market with releases. This DVD is selling very well, so that hasn’t happened yet, but it will happen.

Monster Hunt - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand (English Dub)
Video on Demand (Subtitles)
When this film first came out, it became the biggest Chinese box office hit of all. However, it failed to make any real impact here and its DVD release slipped beneath my radar. The screener arrived nearly two months late. Is it a film that is just too Chinese to find an audience here? Does it not survive translation? Or is the film a hidden gem that deserves to be seen by more? Read my review to find out.

My Little Pony: Equestria Girls: Magical Movie Night - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Speaking of franchises that I thought had faded away. You don’t hear people talk about My Little Pony nearly as much as you did a few years ago, so I figured the fade was over. However, this DVD is actually selling better than the Lego DC Super Hero Girls above, perhaps boosted by the upcoming feature films.

Re-Animator: Limited Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
A cult classic and one of the best Lovecraft movies ever made. I put in a request for a review, but so far the screener has not shown up. There are plenty of extras on the two-disc Blu-ray and it is clearly a contender for Pick of the Week.

Snatched - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film was expected to do well in theaters and with critics, considering how well Amy Schumer’s previous film did. It didn’t live up to expectations in either regard. Extras include an audio commentary track, deleted / alternative scenes, and outtakes. That’s not enough to be worth picking up, but if you are a fan of Amy Schumer, it is worth a rental, maybe.

Teen Wolf Double-Shot
Teen Wolf - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Teen Wolf Too - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Teen Wolf hasn’t really aged well and Teen Wolf Too wasn’t any good to begin with. That said, there is some nostalgia factor here and the first film includes a new two-hour long making-of featurette.

Undercover Grandpa - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Normally this film wouldn’t be big enough to make this list, but it is a slow week and this is selling better than expected. On the other hand, there are only two reviews and both are negative, while it bombed in theaters and is only getting a DVD release.

Christmas Releases - Buy from Amazon:
No Christmas releases of note this week or next, thank goodness. I haven’t dared look too much into the future, so I don’t know when they will return. But they’re coming.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
The Breaking Point: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Fatal Fury: The Movie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Flesh - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Freebie and the Bean - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Hidamari Sketch: Honeycomb - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The Hunter’s Prayer - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Kung Fu Yoga - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Master of the Drunken Fist: Beggar So - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Master of the Shadowless Kick: Wong-Kei Ying - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The Night Of The Sorcerers / The Loreley's Grasp - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Taisho Trilogy - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Tenement: Game Of Survival - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Tokyo Ravens: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
World War Blue - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
There’s not a lot of secondary Blu-ray releases this week and even fewer that are worth checking out. I like the two martial arts movies from HBO Asia, Master of the Drunken Fist: Beggar So and Master of the Shadowless Kick: Wong-Kei Ying.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 3D Combo Pack
Bad movie. Skip it.

4K Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Snatched - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Neither movie is worth buying. They are certainly not worth paying extra for 4K.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Power Rangers: Operation Overdrive - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
When RPM comes out, I will buy it.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
10 Year Reunion - Reviews - Video on Demand
Alien: Covenant - Reviews - Video on Demand
Cézanne and I - Reviews - Video on Demand
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 - Reviews - Video on Demand (Theatrical)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 - Reviews - Video on Demand (With Extras)
Pilgrimage - Reviews - Video on Demand
Wolves - Reviews - Video on Demand
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is clearly the biggest release of the week and arguably the best. On a side note, I’ve seen conflicting reports when Alien: Covenant is coming out on Video on Demand. Some say it is next week, but it is available on Amazon right now.
