Weekend Wrap-Up: Labor Day Bounce Helps Bodyguard Pull In $10.54 million

The last weekend of the summer had no new wide releases, so it made sense that the box office would drop even further. However, that was not the case. I think the combination of the last long weekend of the summer and terrible recent box office results led a lot of people to go to the movies one last time before school starts. After all, it is likely most moviegoers haven’t seen a movie in theaters for several weeks. The Hitman’s Bodyguard easily led the way with $10.54 million over three days and $13.27 million including Monday. It earned more over three days than any of its competitors earned over four. Overall, the box office rose 9.8% from last weekend to $76 million. Sadly, this is still 24% lower than the same weekend last year, but it could have been worse. Year-to-date, 2017 has pulled in $7.45 billion, which puts it 6.3% or $500 million behind last year’s pace.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard earned $10.54 million / $13.27 million over the Labor Day long weekend lifting its total to $57.97 million after three weeks of release. The film has already earned enough domestically to cover its $30 million production budget, so now it is paying off its advertising budget. It won’t take long before it is profitable.
Annabelle: Creation remained in second place with $7.51 million / $9.19 million over the weekend for a total of $90.87 million after four weeks of release. Its three-day theater average is still over $2,000, so it won’t be completely destroyed when It comes out and its chances of getting to $100 million domestically rose dramatically this weekend.
Wind River managed $6.24 million / $7.85 million over the weekend for a total of $20.27 million after a month of release. This makes it one of the best limited releases of the year so far.
Leap! earned fourth place with $4.85 million / $6.27 million giving it a two-week total of $12.76 million. This isn’t a great result, but it is better than it could have been.
Both Logan Lucky and Dunkirk could claim fifth place. Logan Lucky earned fifth place over the three-day weekend with $4.41 million, just ahead of Dunkirk with $4.37 million. However, if you had in Monday, the two films were reversed at $5.58 million to $5.47 million. While the two films had nearly identical weekend totals, Dunkirk is way ahead of Logan Lucky at $180.20 million to $22.50 million.
Since none of the new releases opened truly wide, or even semi-wide, we will deal with them in the theater average chart column. In the meanwhile, we can talk about the sophomore class. Birth of the Dragon fell to 15th place with $1.74 million / $2.22 million over the weekend for a total of $5.88 million. All Saints opened in 16th place and fell to 21st place with $1.22 million / $1.64 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $3.83 million.
