International Box Office: Justice League Plummets, Still Grabs First with in $71.5 million

November 29, 2017

Justice League

Justice League plummeted more than 60% to $71.5 million on 32,800 screens in 66 markets for two week totals of $310.98 million internationally and $482.88 million worldwide. It’s only major opening came in Japan, where it earned first place with $3.85 million on 645 screens. This is ahead of Wonder Woman and Thor: Ragnarok, so the movie is keeping its dreams of $800 million worldwide alive. It really needs that much to break even any time soon. Its biggest holdover was China, where it fell 68% to $16.36 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $84.17 million. It should be able to get to the century mark there, which will be reason to celebrate. It remained in first place in Brazil with $5.4 million on 1,617 screens for a two-week total of $24.8 million.

Coco raced into second place with $30.7 million in 22 markets for totals of $82.2 million internationally and $155.1 million worldwide. It finally expanded outside of Mexico this past weekend. It opened in first place in China with $17.92 million; the only Disney animated film to open better in that market was Zootopia. It also earned first place in Russia with $3.16 million on 1,298 screens. The goal for this film is $400 million internationally, but since it hasn’t opened in two thirds of the world, it is still too soon to tell if it will get there. I remain cautiously optmistic.

Murder on the Orient Express remained in third place with $17.2 million in 62 markets over the weekend for totals of $122.6 million internationally and $197.0 million worldwide. The film’s biggest new market was Spain, where it earned $2.6 million. Meanwhile, the film has yet to open in Brazil, Italy, and South Korea, as well as a few smaller markets, and should finish with over $250 million worldwide. Unless it cost more to advertise than its $55 million production budget, it will break even before it reaches the home market.

Daddy’s Home 2 entered the top five for the first time earning fourth place with $13.8 million in 24 markets for a still early international total of $15.0 million. The film lead the chart in the U.K. earning $6.56 million in 505 theaters, which is actually a better opening than it managed here. It only managed second place in Australia with $1.77 million on 304 screens, which is quite a bit weaker than its opening here.

Manhunt rounded out the top five with $11.16 million over the weekend for a total opening of $11.22 million. All of this was earned in its third place debut in its native China.

Thor: Ragnarok was pushed out of the top five, but it is still worth tracking. The film added $11.0 million in 56 markets to its totals, which now sit at $512.6 million internationally and $790.3 million worldwide. It will become the eighth film of the year to get to $800 million and the eighth film in the MCU to reach $800 million worldwide.
