Weekend Predictions: Coco Looks to Threepeat on Top

December 8, 2017

Coco

There is only one wide release this weekend, Just Getting Started. However, it is barely opening wide and is widely expected to miss the top ten. This means the top five will barely change from last week and Coco should have no trouble remaining on top of the chart. This weekend last year, Office Christmas Party opened in second place, behind Moana. Office Christmas Party was hardly a monster hit, but it was strong enough to keep 2017 from winning the year-over-year comparison. Hopefully, it will still be close.

Coco is losing a couple of hundred theaters this weekend, but that shouldn’t have a huge effect on its box office numbers. It will easily remain in first place with about $18 million. This is nearly as much as Moana earned at this point in its run. Additionally, unless it completely collapses next weekend, it will remain in wide release until at least the first weekend of January.

Justice League lost about 10% of its theaters this week and that will hurt it a little at the box office. Look for just under $9 million over the weekend for a total of just over $210 million. This would be a huge amount of money, if the film hadn’t cost $300 million to make. As it is, it is the most expensive film in the DCEU and will finish with the lowest amount domestically.

Wonder will be close behind with just over $8 million meaning it could hit $100 million by the end of the weekend. This is likely enough to earn a profit, even before taking into account its international numbers.

Thor: Ragnarok should be next with just under $7 million this weekend, pushing its domestic number to $300 million. It will be the sixth film released in 2017 to get to that milestone. It won’t be the last.

The Disaster Artist is expanding into over 800 theaters and that gives it a real shot at the top five. With stellar reviews and arguably the best opening of last weekend, it could fight for second place with over $8 million. Anything lower than $4 million will be seen as a real disappointment. Splitting the difference earns it fifth place with just over $6 million.

Just Getting Started is the only new wide release of the week, but its box office chances are terrible. There’s no buzz, there are no reviews, and it is being released by a struggling distributor. It will likely struggle to reach the Mendoza Line with just $4 million during its opening weekend.
