International Box Office: The Last Jedi Dominates with $230.0 million, but Wasn’t the Only Release

We’ve been tracking Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s international numbers since it debuted, so there’s not a lot to talk about here. The film dominated the international chart with $230.0 million in 54 markets during its first weekend of release, while its worldwide opening was $450.0 million. However, it wasn’t the only film at the international box office.
Youth debuted in first place in its native China with $44.35 million over the weekend for a total opening of $48.21 million.
The Thousand Faces of Dunjia was next with $27.79 million during its first full weekend and $33.90 million in total.
Coco fell from first to fourth place with $27.4 million in 36 markets for totals of $297.4 million internationally and $448.1 million worldwide. The film earned third place in China with $17.17 million over the weekend for a four-week total of $154.83 million. It is in a virtual tie with Despicable Me 3 for the second biggest animated hit in China. It is either second or third, depending on if you look at the local currency or how you convert local currency to American dollars. This confusion won’t matter for long, because Coco will shortly become the undisputable number two, behind only Zootopia, which earned $235.77 million.
There are two films that have a legitimate claim to fifth place. Steel Rain opened in first place in South Korea with $12.21 million in 1,389 screens. However, only $10.52 million of this was earned over the weekend, so technically is should be in sixth place.
Murder on the Orient Express, on the other hand, pulled in $10.8 million over the weekend for totals of $200.7 million internationally and $298.0 million worldwide.
