Weekend Wrap-Up: The Last Jedi and Jumanji Nearly Tie Over 4-day Weekend with $67 million

It was a really close weekend with Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle both earning around $67 million during the four-day weekend. In fact, Jumanji beat The Last Jedi on New Year’s Day. Overall, the box office grew 11% from last weekend to $194 million, which was 4.3% more than the same weekend last year. It’s going to take a bit before we have the final numbers for all studios to compare how 2017 did compared to 2016, but it is safe to say 2016 will come out on top.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi earned first place with $52.52 million / $66.8 million over the weekend for a total of $531.51 million after three weeks of release. The film overtook Beauty and the Beast for first place on the 2017 domestic chart. It is already in eighth place on the all-time domestic chart and it has a shot at the top five.
Last year, Sony’s biggest hit domestically was Ghostbusters. It was not a good year for the studio. This year, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has a real shot at doubling Ghostbusters’ domestic total and it won’t even be the studio’s biggest hit of the year. This past weekend, the film pulled in $50.05 million / $66.27 million for a two-week total of $185.22 million. The film reportedly cost $90 million to make, after tax incentives, so there’s probably a little more than $100 million on the screen. If true, then the studio has covered its production budget based on its domestic numbers alone.
Pitch Perfect 3 earned $16.81 million / $21.68 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $68.17 million. It still has a shot at $100 million domestically, but it will need to have better legs going forward. That said, the film likely wasn’t a very expensive movie to make, so the studio should still be happy with this result.
On the other hand, The Greatest Showman cost $84 million to make, so its weekend box office numbers are less impressive. It earned fourth place over the three-day weekend with $15.52 million, while it earned third place on Monday for a four-day total of $20.91 million. Its running tally now sits at $54.42 million and it has a shot at matching its production budget domestically. That will be enough to save face.
Ferdinand rounded out the top five with $11.39 million / $14.85 million for a total of $57.01 million after three weeks of release. It is doing better internationally, but not by enough to break even any time soon.
All the Money in the World earned seventh place during its first full weekend of release with $5.58 million / $7.21 million for an eight-day total of $14.34 million. The film’s reviews are good, but not award-worthy and there are a lot of award-worthy films competing for limited box office dollars.
