Weekend Estimates: Jumanji, Insidious Beat Star Wars

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

The Last Jedi’s run at the top of the chart came to an abrupt end this weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday morning. Disney’s big Christmas hit doesn’t seem to have much by way of legs going into January, as it falls by 55% from New Year’s weekend, the worst performance in the top 10. It will still pick up another $23.551 million or so, according to the studio, for a total of $572.5 million to date domestically. Its global total now stands at $1.2 billion, the 13th-best performance of all time.

But this weekend belongs to two other films. Jumanji is down just 28% this weekend, to $36 million, for a domestic total of $244 million. Its consistency through the holidays and into the New Year makes a $300 million domestic total look like a very good bet. Its moves into the top 10 movies released in 2017 this weekend.

Insidious: The Last Key had more modest goals, and its fair to say that it has more than met them, with $29.265 million projected for the weekend by Universal. That’s up a bit from the $22.7 million debut of Insidious Chapter 3, and suggests more from the franchise is to be expected, one way or another.

For Last Jedi, there was one other piece of bad news this weekend. It opened with a disappointing $28.7 million in China, which wasn’t enough to top the chart there, and isn’t much more than half of the $52.43 million-opening enjoyed there by The Force Awakens. In fact, it’s less than Rogue One’s $30.22 milion debut. That points to a total in the territory of not much more than $50 million—far behind some other Hollywood fair. The Fate of the Furious made close to $400 million in China, by way of comparison.

Some major expansions this weekend pushed some awards hopefuls up the charts. Molly’s Game will finish seventh, with $7 million from 1,608 theaters. It has grossed just over $14 million so far. Darkest Hour expanded into 1,733 theaters this weekend, but didn’t gain much momentum. It will take $6.355 million, for $28.4 million to date, and stays in eighth place overall. I, Tonya moves up to 12th on the chart, with $2.4 million from 242 theaters, and a theater average that remains over $10,000 in its fifth weekend.

Two films still playing in very limited release are the theater average champs this weekend. The Post will make about $1.7 million from 36 locations, for an average of $47,222, according to Fox. Phantom Thread, meanwhile, is set for $245,000 from six theaters. Both films will be ramping up their presence significantly in the next few weeks.
