Friday Estimates: Post Nearly Ties Jumanji $6.13 million to $5.9 million

There was a two-horse race on the Friday box office chart. In the end, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle came out on top with $6.13 million, for $262.26 million after 24 days of release. Because it is a holdover, it should have better legs over the rest of the weekend, putting it on pace for just over $30 million over the weekend, matching our prediction perfectly.
Likewise, The Post will match out prediction very closely after earning $5.9 million during its opening day. Its stellar reviews were matched by an A from CinemaScore, so the word-of-mouth should be a real asset. Furthermore, the film is aimed at a more mature target audience, which should also enhance its legs. I was hoping for a little more than $6 million opening night, but a four-day opening of just over $20 million is still likely.
The Commuter topped expectations with $4.56 million during its opening day. On the downside, its reviews are mixed and it had the weakest CinemaScore of the four wide releases with just a B. It should still come close to $15 million, which is acceptable.
Insidious: The Last Key was next with $3.4 million on Friday. This is 73% lower than its opening Friday, but it should bounce back due to the holiday and match our $13 million prediction.
Proud Mary struggled, earning fifth place with $3.3 million on Friday. It has the worst reviews of the weekend, but did manage a B plus from CinemaScore, which is okay, nothing more. It should come within a rounding error of our $10 million prediction, but $11 million isn’t out of reach.
Paddington 2 bombed on Friday. It only managed eighth place with $2.4 million, despite earning 99% positive reviews and an A from CinemaScore. It is a family film and it should bounce back enough to earn $12 million over the four-day weekend, but $12 million is a terrible opening for a film for which Warner Bros. spent $30 million to buy the domestic rights.
