Weekend Wrap-Up: Jumanji Rumbles Back to the Top with $10.93 million

February 6, 2018

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle earned first place for the fourth time over the weekend with $10.93 million, while Maze Runner: The Death Cure was a close second with $10.47 million. This left Winchester in third place with $9.31 million, but it could have been much worse. Overall, the weekend fell 33% from last weekend with $95 million. More importantly, is 3.6% lower than the same weekend last year. 2018 lost its small lead over 2017 before the weekend and it is now 0.8% or $8 million below last year’s pace at $1.04 billion to $1.05 billion. It’s going to get a lot worse next weekend, due to the misalignment in holidays, but I think 2018 will quickly recover after that.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle earned $10.93 million in its seventh weekend of release for a running tally of $352.57 million. The film will remain in the top five next weekend, but that’s likely the last time it will be there. Eight weeks in the top five is simply amazing in this day and age.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure was pushed into second place with $10.47 million over the weekend for a ten-day total of $40.04 million. This film suffered from a 57% sophomore stint drop-off, which isn’t good, but it could have been worse. Fortunately for the studio, the film’s worldwide box office is already high enough to cover its entire production budget and a bit of the advertising budget. At this pace, it will break even during its initial push into the home market.

Winchester managed third place with $9.31 million, which is a little better than we predicted and isn’t bad for a film that cost just $3.5 million for the distribution rights. Unfortunately, its reviews and B minus CinemaScore means it will likely have short legs. Also, there are three wide releases coming out this weekend and next, so the film will be knocked out of the top five after just one week and could be out of the top ten the next.

The Greatest Showman held on better than expected with $7.70 million over the weekend for a total of $137.37 million after seven weeks of release. This is likely the last weekend the film will remain in the top five, but it will have no trouble getting to $150 million domestically. This is enough to cover its entire production budget.

The Post remained in fifth place with $5.22 million over the weekend for a total of $67.20 million. Unless it wins big on Oscar night, this is the last time it will be in the top five.

Hostiles was right behind with $5.11 million over the weekend for a total of $20.82 million. It fell 49% during its sophomore stint in wide release, which is a little steep for this type of film. On the other hand, its fellow sophomore film, Padmaavat, fell just 42% to $2.55 million. This is much better than Indian films usually perform. Niche market films tend to have shorter legs, as underserved fans rush out to see them as soon as possible.
